I'm doing nofap in an attempt resolve sexual dysfunction issues

I'm posting this here in case it can be informative to others. This is an explicit, masculine thread, so if you have the maturity of a 12 year-old, read no further.

Some of you may have noticed the image in my signature. It's a nofap counter which probably helps as a visual reminder to myself. Nofap is an internet-sprung movement that advocates that many young men have a distorted sexuality and other problems due to years of p**rn->masturbation->orgasm, in my case an average a little over ~2x/day, sometimes higher, since I was ~13. A lot of people have tried abstinence for months-to-years and found great resolution to their personal problems including the ability to have sex with real women, improved memory, improved mood, and better personal relations with real women, see here for a brief review:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7oFVOJf0TzY
and here in the links for a comprehensive review:
http://yourbrainonporn.com

I'm not sure that I believe any of the "science" involved here, as is the case for most of what passes for medicine. I do however believe the correlations and the testimonials, so I'm willing to give this a try.

My background is I've had erectile dysfunction since I was ~23, which started right around the time that I had depression, was gaining weight, was getting into harder (albeit still relatively vanilla) p**rn, had my first good relationship, and was dealing with burnout. I had my lowest term GPA at University when that happened, by a substantial margin. To give you an idea, my TGPA was 2.61, and I think it was the only semester out of 8 where I scored below 3.50. Doctors looked at my profile and assumed I had depression/anxiety issues (I probably did), and assumed this was the cause of my sexual dysfunction (probably not). I can get erections, but not that often, sometimes never, they're usually imperfect and never last long.

I went to doctors and for years their advice was try antibiotics, try anti-depressants, try these v**** supplements, and so on. For example a urologist I saw in Columbus, Ohio thought I had prostatitis and gave me antibiotics. The cialis for example does seem to help (a little), but I was young, I don't think this was the issue for a man aged 23-32 (the past 9 years) with no other clear health problems. I had my blood measured at some point, and it was completely fine, my testosterone levels on two different indicators were ~19 and ~550, my SHBG was ~24, my cholesterol and glucose were normal, and so on, and all of this was ~9 months ago when I was ~20 lbs heavier. I'm getting more blood work done in a couple weeks, including prolactin, but I expect a null result. The doctor said if these tests come back normal he'll refer me to a specialist. So I'll probably be seeing a specialist. The other "conventional" treatment I've tried and am trying is weight loss, I've dropped from ~245 lbs at my peak (13 months ago) to around ~200 lbs (I'm 5'11) -- which is the weight I had when this started. I found numerous studies on pubmed demonstrating a modest correlation between obesity and ED, though I have not found any decent causal explanation for this. Maybe the problem will clear up magically as I hopefully work my way down to ~180 lbs in the next three months, I don't know.

ED is also the reason I'm not on finasteride / dutasteride / RU58851 / CB0301. It's not responsible to take an anti-androgen when I already have one of the side effects. It could prevent me from understanding what's going on and fixing it.

I've tried a combination of l-arginine+pine bark extract as recommended by the internet, I saw no effect. That's the only herbal remedy I've tried. There seems to be a "ginseng" for every Asian country, and I have not tried those. I did notice an improvement when I started taking Blackmore's Biozinc, but it only lasted a few days.

I'm willing to try this as one of the most common alternative therapies out there, which is nofap, given the huge number of successful testimonials. I reiterate that the so-called science doesn't seem satisfactory, with various comments about dopamine, desensitisation, sensitisation, edging, et cetera that sound like pseudoscience. But that's all right, it's the same with real medicine whereby doctors often prescribe drugs in spite of having no idea how they work.

I tried this around early March this year, and never made it past 3 or 4 days. I'm now up to 20 days with the aid of amitriptyline, a tricyclic anti-depressant that helps with sleep. I think that helping with sleep can help me reduce my dependency on masturbation, though I plan to eventually cycle off as I don't like anti-depressants. I have not noticed much change after 20 days ... sometimes I get morning wood (used to be never). I get an occasional, maybe one a day, ~80% erection from fantasy, but they don't last long, though that's more vitality than I had a few months ago. My big surprise is that I've neither flatlined (which happens to a lot of people by this time), nor had a wet dream. I would have figured that going a week without an ejaculation would lead to an automatic wet dream, but apparently not.

Some people with testimonials heal after 2 months, some heal after 6 months, some don't (which means they probably have another problem). I hope that I don't heal quickly. I will also continue with the bloodwork/standard medicine up to a point, continue with the weight loss, weightlifting, and better diet. I may try a water fast, when I was perusing propeciahelp forums a while back I read that one guy cured his ED with a 14-day waterfast:
http://www.propeciahelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6142
I did not get my ED from finasteride unless I was poisoned by a third party source 9 years ago, which seems unlikely. But perhaps the same principle applies. Elsewhere in the forum somebody compiled all the water fast cases on the forum, and it seems like it cured half of them. I'm likely to try an intermediate water fast at some point in the next few months.

Good luck. I tried nofap a couple years ago, didn't get past 1 month I don't think, I was manic with horniness and couldn't concentrate on anything else. I was only really doing it out of interest. I would regularly read the epic NoFap thread on BodyBuilding.com, it was pretty funny and a good sense of camaraderie. I think excessive p**rn can be quite damaging for certain people and I completely believe in p**rn-induced ED.

I know you said you had your bloods tested but you didn't mention estrogen - I assume you had that tested too? Overweight + ED are both linked with elevated estrogen.

I rewatched "Your Brain on p**rn: How Internet p**rn affects the brain" on youtube for the first time in a while after watching my posts.He discussed the mechanisms of addiction a lot.

I can't help but conclude that I'm addicted to:
- Sugar;
- Internet surfing;

For internet surfing, I often have multiple tabs going on for various websites discussing various subjects, multiple tabs open simultaneously. I might switch from one half-written post to go writing another post and so on. I have a hard time watching something on Netflix or Youtube for the full duration without clicking refresh, refresh, refresh on multiple tabs at once. It sounds like I have multiple problems. I think I knew this already but it's something to see it so convincingly confirmed in a mechanistic way.

I will check the bodybuilding.com thread.

I think estrogen is among the hormones we'll be looking at in the upcoming blood test. I mentioned estrogen, prolactin, and progesterone to my doctor as molecules which should be added. I don't have the form with me as I'm travelling, I'll check in a week.

Actually, my main reason for doing nofap is to see if I get thicker hair. I ceartinly stopped shedding.

Good luck with it OP, i'm trying to quit too for some time.

Just an advice on fantasizing: don't do it. It's like an alcoholic going to a bar and opening bottles to smell the drinks.

I've had the best results when I completely went fantasizing free. Make a strategy and distract yourself when thoughts start. For me it's hardest at night and in the morning.

@Dench57

"I was manic with horniness and couldn't concentrate on anything else."

Even if that might seem exaggerated, it has been my experience also. The horniness actually has aspects of manic/hipomanic episode. It's very powerful.

It makes sex ****ing amazing though when you're not allowed a release any other way. You can definitely become desensitized to it by having unlimited HD p**rn at your fingertips. The downside was...I didn't last as long.

Last night I woke up around ~1:30am with intermittent, intermediate erections. That hasn't happened to me ... I can't remember the last time it's happened to me. It took me ~30 minutes to fall back asleep. I know you're saying "don't fantasize", but it was nice to feel like I have any kind of sexuality.

Not masturbating will actually make sex worse for me. I will last longer and with less pleasure.

How is lasting longer a bad thing?

ALSO, is there anyone here that legit believes the theory that no fap may help slow Androgenetic Alopecia?? If so, what is the physiological basis for this? I always see people on these forums implying that it helps, or even STOPPED their shedding cold.

It's a debate as old as the internet...

No one in that time period has ever convincingly proved anything. The pro-jerk off people are too indulgent to let go of their ways, the anti-jerk off crew never stick around to show their "results" of tremendous hair growth.

Leads me to believe there is no correlation, but hey. I'll give it a try mainly because I never have. It wont kill me not to do it for a few months.

Sounds about right. I had a wet dream while doing it for the first time since I was like 15.

Doesn't have to happen. The body absorbs it. Wet dreams are just like the name implies; it's only happened to me once at a 3 week streak. I do have pre-c*m "issues" though at any sight or thought that is sexual. Protip: ice-cold shower before bedtime reduces chances of "bad" thoughts at night

I'm apparently at ~26 days now. Wow, that is by far my record since hitting puberty, I was completely addicted to jerking off for nearly two decades, a couple times or so I went 4 or 5 days without going at it, but usually I *needed* to jerk off two or three times a day.

The past couple nights have been difficult though. I am sleeping in my own bed again, after three weeks in Sweden/Denmark and ~30 hours in airplanes and airports (ugh). I've had trouble falling asleep due to jet lag, so I almost relapsed last night. I could hear the voices in my head " just do it once", but I'm determined to give this an extended, legitimate shot to see how it goes.

Speaking of which, I do occasionally get erections just from fantasy, as mentioned before. It's nice to know I have a sexual pulse. I had a few last night, since I had maybe 4 or 5 hours of insomnia (due to jet lag). They were reasonably hard ... and lasted a little longer, maybe a few minutes, so that's a good sign. It could be progress from nofap, or just progress since I went to the gym yesterday and this included squats. Squats are often argued to be the single greatest exercise.

The body absorbs what? You mean reverse ejaculation? Isn't that bad for you?

I'm still recovering from 8 hours of jet lag which is screwing up my sleep cycle, anyway, I woke up in the middle of the night last night, and when I regained consciousness I noticed I was fapping and my dick was hard, which means I was doing it semi-consciously. Pretty funny imo. I then stopped.

I think I'm making progress, and I can't believe I've made it to 28 days. My goal for the time being is 90 days, but this might change as things develop.

Next week when my sleep is back to normal, I will commission blood tests to re-measure my hormone and lip profiles.

i dont get it, you have ed but you masturbate?

My situation was such that i could get an intermediate-quality erection and then ejaculation but only with with significant effort. I was never getting hard from real life, from fantasy alone, from p**rn by itself with no manual manipulation, very rarely getting morning wood, last few times i've been with women i felt nothing.

oh ok, my bad man, you mentioned that you havent been able to do no-fap in previous attempts so i got kinda thrown off.

i had a similar problem at the beginning of the year, i was always horny, then when it came to having sex with my ex gf as soon as i knew i was about to put it in i would just loose my erection. My situation was definitely psychological though, i took a quick finasteride break, made sure it wasnt the finasteride. Problem resolved after 1 or 2 attempts with her and havent had a problem since. I also broke up with her about 3 weeks ago and for some reason, i find myself 10x more horny ever since despite being on finasteride. I also think its because ive been with a couple women since her and im feeling alot more confident ever since i left her, idk why considering 1 month and ahalf into finasteride my hair is ****ty af.

good luck man, you will resolve this i know it for sure! unless you have a medical condition id say nofap was probably a good approach at trying to fix this.

I think the cause of post-breakout horniness is the anxiety. The brain can apparently mix up anxiety and sex drive, and after a break up there's a lot of anxiety from realizing that it's not going to happen. I've had post-breakup and post-rejection horniness before, I assume that's the case.

I might have other problems. According to pubmed, obesity correlates with ED. This morning I clocked in at 89.1 Kg, my lowest weight this year, and down from ~107 Kg at my peak ~1 year ago. If I get down to ~82 Kg and a 32 inch waist size, I can rule that out.

I'm also getting blood tests later this week, I got some last year but they revealed nothing unusual. Will try again with more hormones looked at.
