I always thought smaller bald guys had it better.

I live in America so I cannot comment on other males. I am pretty sure that there are males in other parts of the world, accept for in France where all the inhabitants in that country are clearly Vagina's.
BTW, I for one do not really come to this site looking for information to improve my look so I do not think the word "vanity" can be attached to my posting habits. I simply come hear for entertainment and to help others who are battling with "treating" and accepting their hair loss.

So is everything else in this thread, what's your point? Look at pictures of guys who look good bald, and pictures of guys who don't.....you'll eventually notice a pattern.

An effort to get a prescription? I went in for a physical and asked the doctor for a finasteride proscar script, no effort really.

And how is that any different from going to a tanning salon?

finasteride trials were strenuous and confirmed a risk factor that was so so small. Tanning is awful for you and not just from the risk of skin cancer.

The risk factors of tanning pale in comparison to that of finasteride. Unless you're just talking about pre-mature skin aging (which would be "vain"), the death risk of tanning, according to the American Cancer Society, is very small. Roughly 8,110 people will die of Melanoma in America this year. Divide that by 300 million - which is actually a low number, and you get .000027, or a .0027% chance of dying of skin cancer. MUCH smaller than the 1.2-1.8% chance you have of losing your libido, having erection problems, and growing a set of perkies. And lots of people think those numbers re: impotence with finasteride are actually much worse.

Is it vain to use finasteride? I would say so, but hairloss is something that appears to bother almost all men to different degrees so it has its own category IMO.

It's the same thing with women and their hair, complexions, etc. You don't think those things effect all women? I don't understand how men and hair loss is really any different.

I do not embrace the feminization of American males.

Then why embrace a drug that stands a 2% chance at feminizing them? I just find that statement pretty ironic!

Going tanning is so ridiculous and in the end you are just faking it which is pathetic IMO.

So you'd agree that hair concealers, wigs, and transplants are also just faking it. Right?

BTW, I for one do not really come to this site looking for information to improve my look so I do not think the word "vanity" can be attached to my posting habits.

you're on a hair loss discussion forum but you don't care about how your hair looks, nor do you care much about your appearance in general?

not sure if i really believe that man...

Holy christ man you are a spin doctor. I will attempt to be brief but:
Going tanning every couple of days for 20 minutes at a time (not including driving) is a little more strenuous then taking 30 seconds to get a script and then an extra few minutes filling the script twice a year. Not to mention the yearly tanning costs (unknown) must be more then the $40 I spend on proscar per year. Seriously come on!
The finasteride trials concluded that less then 2% get sexual sides and not b**ch tits so get your facts straight. These sides subside once the drug is stopped. Sexual sides is not feminization.
You compare libido issues to death rate statistics? Um okay?
Death is just a worst case result of tanning. Skin cancer rates are increasing every year and though most skin cancers are curable, I am sure it is not a fun time. Not to mention these other sides: eye damage, immune system damage, cataracts, skin wrinkles, general increase in skin aging and kidney stones. All of things are not reversible once you stop tanning (unlike finasteride) as they require additional treatment. Not to mention the tanning craze is recent so I would not be surprised if skin cancer rate skyrocket once these tanners get older.
Again, finasteride sides are a reduction in sexual function that is very very rare and a PHYSICAL ISSUE associated with a reduction in labido and/or sperm counts. The feminization of American men is a social issue so my support of finasteride has absolutely no correlation with a social issue you freak!
Wigs make me laugh and are totally ridiculous IMO.
I said nothing about not caring about my looks, stop taking my words out of context and have some responsibility pal. finasteride use can be described as vain (as I said) but it takes virtually no time which is a huge mitigating factor. When I initially joined this site I wanted to be responsible and find out as much as I could about a drug I was taking, now things are different.
Men who go tanning suck.......there is no argument. Though it is fun to watch you rationalize such a ridiculous act.

Easy, internet hard-***. I said that gyno (b**ch tits) is included in that listed 2% - which it is. Also, anyone who actually believes that 2% figure is kidding themselves. Studies can tend to be a little biased, especially when millions of dollars become involved.

These sides subside once the drug is stopped.

Most of the time, yes. But that's not the case with gyno. Once you grow tits you have to get them surgically removed. Incredibly expensive and supposedly very painful as well.

Sexual sides is not feminization.

So laying down in a tanning bed (that is traditionally used 70-80% of the time by women) indicates "feminization," but lacking the ability to screw your girlfriend and/or growing breasts does not? Solid argument there bro.

Skin cancer rates are increasing every year and though most skin cancers are curable, I am sure it is not a fun time.

Most skin cancers are really pretty mild. I've known lots of people that have had carcinomas removed and it wasn't that big of a deal. But yeah, skin cancer's a bummer. So too is the inability to have sex. Kind of difficult to say which one's worse. Maybe we should take a poll to find out?

Not to mention these other sides: eye damage, immune system damage, cataracts, skin wrinkles, general increase in skin aging and kidney stones.

Eye damage and cataracts? Non-existant if you're halfway smart and use eye protection, or simply wear quality sunglasses outdoors.

Immune system damage? Please, enlighten me. Many scientists claim that UV rays can actually bolster the immune system by creating vitamin-D, which ironically even has anti-tumor effects. This is also a contributing factor to why more people get sick in the winter than in the summer.

Kidney stones? Again, please enlighten me. Does the sunlight there in Po-dunk, Virgina cause kidney stones?

And skin wrinkles? Who cares about wrinkles, right? Only vain "pussified" men and women. Not a man's man like yourself who isn't vain whatsoever.

Not to mention the tanning craze is recent so I would not be surprised if skin cancer rate skyrocket once these tanners get older.

Uh.. the finasteride craze is pretty recent too. We'll have to see what happens with the long term effects of that as well.

The feminization of American men is a social issue so my support of finasteride has absolutely no correlation with a social issue you freak!

Excellent technique. Your illogical arguments are made even more convincing by calling me a freak at the end of your grammatically disastrous sentences. Well done.

Men who go tanning suck.......there is no argument. Though it is fun to watch you rationalize such a ridiculous act.

I agree that men who regularly tan are kinda lame. So too are dudes who shave their arms and legs. And it's laughably ridiculous when guys in the gym contantly look at themselves in the mirror and flex all the time.

My point is simply that we have no room to talk, and that we all do things that are pretty conceited and narcissistic, whether it's tanning, trimming our nose hairs, or worrying about hair loss to the point of taking prescription drugs. Looking at the big picture, no one on this forum (including myself) is really in a position to rip on people who tan - even a macho internet badass like yourself.

You are wrong sir on so many of your arguments, but it impossible to have a discussion with someone who takes words out of context.
All I can say (and this is my last comment) is that taking a pill once a day strictly for ascetic purposes does not rule us out to critique others. That sort of wimpy approach to life where everyone should be accepting to virtually everything is disappointing and surely fits with your side of this argument. Taking finasteride effects my life in almost no way and it appears to be effective in keeping my hair. There is very little vanity in that. Based on your argument, it appears that if men do anything to look good then they have no right talking about anyone else's personal habits. Seriously, I have a friend who likes to dress well, trim his toenails and comb his hair, which are all things aimed to simply "look" better. He has no right to talk about anyone...right?

Sorry for calling you out on your ignorant statements. Going the extra distance to make up figures to support your argument (tanning causes kidney stones and hurts the immune system - seriously, wtf?) goes to show that you have no idea what you're talking about. But at least you proved to the board that you're a total hardass and a bigger man than the rest of us. Bravo!

As far as stones, well an ex of mine has had them for years and her doctor had her stop her weekly tanning trips and they have not come back. Little is known on the exact causes of kidney stones but it is confirmed that dehydration plays a key role and UV exposure can dehydrate the body. Even a girly man like yourself can accept that tanning is not good for your body's hydration. I'd ask the doctor to email you but he doesn't like cowards.

Correction, I am actually a bigger man then just you and anyone other man who is such a b**ch that he goes tanning. Not sure what the thousands of other members of this site has to do with your wimpy approach to life?

This quote really disturbs me. To conclude that a man who takes finasteride has no right to judge others vanity is totally unreasonable. Yes, I am an internet badass, in fact, the mention of my johnny24601 username is illegal in five countries because they fear me! I am the manliest man on the plant. It's crazy, when I walk down the street men run away in fear and women won't stop begging for sex. It's sort of embarrassing, but people in my town just call me Big John Stud!

The first article you posted is from a journalist who merely quotes information from the second website - a pamphlet that states the following:

UV radiation from the sun, tanning beds, or sun lamps may cause skin cancer and can have a damaging effect on the immune system.

It says nothing else to support this claim, and provides no hard science as to how UV rays could damage the immune system. Though I suppose if you're a moron and fry yourself everyday, surely something bad is going to happen. Either way, scientists aren't totally sure about the effects of UV rays, nor are they sure about finasteride's long term effects either.

As far as stones, well an ex of mine has had them for years and her doctor had her stop her weekly tanning trips and they have not come back.

If you've ever taken an economics or a stat course before you might know the difference between correlation and causation.

Little is known on the exact causes of kidney stones but it is confirmed that dehydration plays a key role and UV exposure can dehydrate the body. Even a girly man like yourself can accept that tanning is not good for your body's hydration.

What else causes dehydration? Hmm... exercise, air travel, indoor heating, simple respiration. Hell, if she didn't also breathe so damn much she wouldn't have had a problem!

I'd ask the doctor to email you but he doesn't like cowards.

LOL

You typically breathe through your mouth, don't you?

Could you please re-phrase this in English?

Seriously man, grow a pair.

Seriously dude, did your mother drink during the pregnancy?
