I don't think anybody can answer that question for sure, for the simple reason that really long-term studies with topical minoxidil (like 10-20 years or so) haven't been done. They almost certainly never will.

some say propecia only last for 5 years .... and to get regrowth you need minoxidil... my question is this ...

Does minoxidil loss its effect or as long as you apply it everyday and take propecia does minoxidil tapper off and loss effect or anything ?

No one knows for sure but I know some people who are using minoxidil for over 10 years and they are still happy with what they were able to maintain. I think that minoxidil doesnt loss its effectiveness over the time. Some people may think minoxidil is losing its effectiveness because their hair loss is progressing but its just natural progression of the hair loss and minoxidil is still working. It all depends at what rate the hair loss is progressing. if its slow than most likely you will be fine on a long run with minoxidil..

I have read somewhere that some people are using minoxidil non stop for a mount twice a day and then they stop for 2 days and then they apply it again for a mount. They say that it busts minoxidil effectiveness and that they get better re grow.
Brian what do you think about that??

better yet everyone that reads this please post how long you been using minoxidil and how long it has maintained for you !

Thanks
minoxidil only will not help you out long term... Add something like topical spironolactone and Nizoral shampoo.

I have been using minoxidil 5% liquid for almost 5 years (along with finasteride and Nizoral) and am very pleased.

FYI I am also 38 now with a NW2 with slight thinning behind it.

Are you saying that their hair grows better when they take a 2-day break from the minoxidil every month, implying that it's preventing a kind of "tolerance" to the drug? I don't know...I've never seen any support for such a technique in the medical literature, but it's an interesting hypothesis. I doubt that it would hurt to try it, just in case those people are correct in their theory! :)

I just read Dr Rassman's blog and he said Propecia and minoxidil never "stop working". It depends on how aggressive your hair loss presents. He has seen cases where men with very slow progressing male pattern baldness maintain with both treatments well over 5 years. However, if your genetics are too strong, then those medication can only "slow" things down that will eventually happen anyway. And when your hair goes from a NW2 to a NW3 even on the medications, it does not mean the medications are not still working. It means they can make the transition from a NW3 to a NW4 much slower than without them. For me, my hair loss is very slow so with using the medications, its going to be even slower to the point it may just help me keep from ever reaching a NW3 or until maybe there is a better treatment.
