My friend who is experiencing male pattern baldness (in my opinion) is worried about taking finasteride. I told him he should start now to maintain what he has but he wants a second opinion. I got my friend to send me his pictures and told him i'll ask on here to get some more opinions.
What do you guys reckon:
P.S . He is 24 1/2 years old.

He's got pretty severe recession and getting on finasteride can't hurt his situation.

This friend (you) should indeed take finasteride asap but the hair is not bad at all and ignore the negative posters, you have resession but not terrible recession but it's noticable.

If I were in his position, I would not be taking finasteride.

Eh I dunno. He doesn’t have diffuse thinning (like you and I do) so he probably could even have a decade before his loss is noticible, but with that level of recession it will almost certainly happen eventually. Plus we don’t have a crown picture

Why would you recommend your friend to get on finasteride?

If I were your friend, I would use minoxidil instead, and if I still had doubts about the usage of finasteride, I would read the bible, because I rather toy with my mind than toying with my hormones, even though I'm angry at God.

His dick won’t matter once his hair’s gone so then he’ll be double penetrated. I say go with finasteride.

It’s really a choice only he can make. If it were me though I’d hop on finasteride. The shedding is temporary and just removing the telogen hairs that were going to shed anyways. This leads to new hairs entering the anagen phase soon after. There’s a low chance he could experience sides though. From my understanding this usually stops once you quit taking finasteride, so there’s no reason not to take it.

He has 0 thinning though and honestly thats the criteria for me when I recommend someone finasteride or not. And if he had that hairline for years like he says then its very likely that he gonna keep that for another 15+ years. Maybe when he notices signs of it actually changing it would be a better idea to get on finasteride rather than now where hes not seeing changes.

That’s easy then. If he’s fine with his hairline, then just let him keep it. finasteride might not even work if his hairline’s been like that for a while since his follicles may have minaturized and closed off. If he wants to regrow his hairline he should visit a derm to have that checked first. Since he’s 24 they’re probably not closed off unless he started balding real early and didn’t treat it at all. Im pretty sure thinning can occur later on or at any time so I’d be cautious about that. Before he does anything it’s best to visit a derm to check if his follicles are still open if it has been years. Then finasteride if they are. If finasteride alone doesn’t regrow his hairline then throw in minoxidil. If he doesn’t thin he could be a good hair transplant candidate in a 1-5 years

His hair looks fine for the most part now but he has the hair type where it can go south extremely quickly.
