I found something very interesting in a clinical trial about Sphinganine and Finasteride.

The enzyme 5-α-reductase directly causes hair loss in both
males and females. Thus, to determine whether sphinganine has an inhibitory potential toward 5-α-reductase type I, IC50 values were determined in a cell-free assay using cell homogenates isolated from stably transfected human embryonic kidney cells. The IC50 for sphinganine, determined in two independent experiments, 6.5±0.33 and 6.8±0.1 μM, while the control finasteride showed an IC50 of 0.42±0.02 μM. The results indicate that sphinganine is a suitable ingredient to inhibit 5-α-reductase and thus prevent the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

Now, i return to the tittle and the question, has anyone ever tried Sphinganine?

If it does work, is there any reason to choose it over finasteride? If it does the same thing then I imagine it would have the same side effects profile...

Test was done in vitro so, no evidence to suggest it works the same way inside a human body.
No regards to necessary dose, where to obtain it, what the cost is, and safety profile of this molecule in its entirety.
Lots of things to consider.
