The Rest is History

As we grew, so did our userbase. We did a survey one day and found that nearly 30% of our users were women. As a result, we expanded HairlossTalk into a site for both men and women. With our most recent transformation, we've begun focusing heavily on the world of Alopecia sufferers (Areata, Universalis, Totalis, etc). The site now pulls in over 2.5 million users a year, and we've been blessed to have Merck Pharmaceuticals as one of our sponsors for the last 7 years. They have respected my need to remain autonomous however, and have not influenced the content on this site in any way.

Cassin, please don't instantly remove this topic.

What difference does it make? Most posts are not edited. there are plenty of propecia haters on here and plenty of people who love it.

Yeah, what difference does it make? As long as contents are not influenced (and from what I can tell, they are not), it makes no difference.

Yeah I tend to find this forum quite... critical, but mostly open and interesting.

The only thing I don't like so much is some of the censoring of company names etc, other than that I'm mostly quite content :)

Doesnt look like Merck has much influence here. Hell the site even links to a generic finasteride distributors through the store.

If Merck had any influence here, you wouldn't see so much generic finasteride being promoted.

Contrary to what MadClown and others will tell you, Merck's actually one of the most ethical pharmeceutical firms out there. They're actually not all corporate psychopaths hellbent on killing us (shock horror).

So what? There used to be a MERK banner on the front page.

Sites cost an assload of money to run...sites need advertisers to survive. None of the mods or owners even use Merk products. Find one post where I have ever recommended someone even use a Merk product.

And for the record I think that link is old and I don't think Merk has advertised here in a few years.

The 2 main, but not only reasons for censoring are

1. the company has spammed

2. believe it or not some companies have asked us to censor their name because they get mad when someone says something negative about them

I would hope that it doesn't matter whether they are sponsored or not and that everyone is doing the proper research to educate themselves and make their own decisions. This includes gathering information from multiple sources such as other forums and other sites rather than only see what HairLossTalk.com has to say about hairloss. If the money helps keep the site running, then good for them.

Who cares about the sponsors ? :dunno:

What kinda annoys me is that the hairmax lasercomb is sold by HairLossTalk.com =\. I hate that piece of sh*t lol :thumbdown2:

If they were censoring posts for their sponsors then my post count would be in the single digits.

What I really like about this site (and the reason I always find myself coming back as opposed to drifting towards other hair loss communities etc) is how direct people are about treatments. I mean in some ways that disagrees with my own approach, but in another it's great because people are very sure what they like and what they don't. If something is being talked up on HairLossTalk.com, you KNOW it must work fairly well!

this is pretty much the only hair loss site there is other than a few sponsored by transplant surgeons.

I know! I saw some sites like that and they seemed so manipulated! Like twisting facts to make people have transplants ._.
