Hey guys! So I’m a 33 year old white guy with mousey blonde hair. I’ve had a receding hairline at the temples since my teens. Now my hairline is really far back leaving a large forehead. Also, my hair is generally thinning all over on top.

I wanted to grow my hair long so that I could tie it in a ponytail. I have about 3 months of growth with a couple of tidying up trims along the way. I figured later in life I won’t be able to, so I should do it now as I’ve never had ‘long’ hair before.

However, judging by how it’s turning out, I fear it may be too late. I think growing it long is only serving to accentuate the thinness of my hair and I’m feeling like it is a very unflattering look. It’s kind of like a comb over - looks ridiculous on windy days when the strip of hair down the middle of the top of my head flies up. Also, makes me feel like something from a 70s/80s TV show like Dallas when the guys had that really dated thick hair look.

I need some advice. Should I stay the course and keep growing? Should I just get a nice short haircut/short back and sides? Or am I at the point where I should get a buzz cut/shave my head?

I’m able to very quickly grow a thick beard if that helps, but I feel like I only suit designer stubble or clean shaven.

Immediately finasteride and later you can consider hair transplant u would be a good transplant candidate

try a 1 guard all around. it will make it look cleaner but you're still going to look thinning unfortunately. DEF don't grow it out longer.

@Mark Richardson

Not sure what length you were three months ago, but, on average,
three months should be 1.5 inches/ 3.75 centimeters.

Now, as you said yourself, the hairline is definitely receded, quite a lot.

So, I recommend growing it longer on the top, at least to cover the hairline more.

Obviously, it won't look like a Norwood 2 (because it's a four/five), but a buzz cut
could actually make it look worse. So, in my opinion, I think you should continue
to grow the top longer.

Your head shape is not oval.

I highly recommend you take an anti androgen (Propecia, maybe even more?), if
you're not already taking one.

FYI: It's never too late to grow it longer, unless you just got a #0
buzz cut. ;) It will grow again.

Surely shaving my head would be more flattering than my current mullet? Less is more right? That’s the conventional wisdom.

I would go for the buzz cut. You are effectively bald already and it doesn't get better without intervention.

“Effectively bald already”?! Seems a bit of an exaggeration. How terrible would this look if I grew it 12-18 months? My family say the thicker hair makes me look like I have more!

If you're not prepared to try to save your hair I would definitely not recommend growing it out in it's current state. You'd look like a paedophile with a ponytail tbh.

I'd keep it as it is with the sides a little shorter. Try using salt spray as that can give you a natural, thickened, messy look.

No harm in growing it see what it looks like! If it’s shitty then shave it if not then work with what you have :)

People in this thread are giving terrible advice

OP you've lost a ton of hair. I would seriously just shave your head and grow a beard. The longer you grow it, the more it accentuates how badly you're balding

I wouldn't do a transplant either. Transplants mostly work well on guys who have thick/coarse/wavy hair IMO. You have very thin, straight, fine hair. Even 4000 grafts won't give you much coverage. Maybe if you do 2 transplants and get 8000 grafts, you might get somewhat okay hair but that's 32K spent and it's 50-50 in terms of it even looking sorta passable.

^Ignore the above about hair transplants.

Right now you are at a precipice where it is fine to keep your hair long but it won't be soon. To me, as someone who is gay, hair doesn't matter that much in terms of attraction to guys and I am sure most women would agree. A nice face, eyes, body, job and other physical things are more attractive. Your hair is obviously balding now, no way to hide this. It also looks fine the way it is. But if you don't want to do anything about it, why not shave it since that's where it is going?

I have to say, the idea of me getting a hair transplant at this stage, or bothering to take drugs, is laughable. I think I accept that growing it long would look truly awful. It’s a question of whether I’d look better with a short back and sides, a buzz cut or a proper shaved head. I sometimes feel having a beard actually accentuates my baldness because my beard hair is thick and black and it makes my head hair look yellow and whispy in comparison.

If that's the case then why are you trying to keep yours? Self-image?

Well FYI this forum is 90% devoted to different drug regimes for keeping your hair. While I understand your point of view, I have to ask, why would taking drugs to keep your hair be ridiculous? Your hairloss is only going to get worse, I voted for a short, smart haircut, but if you're going to refuse to do anything to stop your baldness you might as well just shave it now and get it over with, you're pretty far gone and the front isn't going to last much longer.

@Mark Richardson I would not give up and say you are too far gone because you are not. If you want more hair back then you can certainly try Finasteride+Minoxidil+Nizoral Shampoo+Derma Rolling+Head massage and see where this gets you. You look good either way, you hair is not as bad or hopeless as many repliers to this thread are saying.
