Hair System Behind Transplanted Front Hair Line.

Long time lurker... first time poster! :)

Over the last 5 years, I have had 2 transplants. And even though they were quite successful and met my realistic expectations, I'm running out of donor hair. At this point, I am looking at BHT... but having seen the results of many BHTs, I am seriously considering a hair system- or the option of shaving it all off and embracing my baldness!

I have a decent front hair line due to 2 previous transplants. That hair isn't going anywhere. I have read that hairline maintenance is the biggest issue with hair systems. So I think this is a good strategy- at least on paper. Anyone in here have gone this route? Are you happy with your decision? And if you are familiar with this procedure- can you recommend any hair system specialists in the US or Europe who can get me started with the first system? (You can PM me - and I will take it from there).

Any advice is appreciated!

Also- in the event I decide to shave it off... I am worried about FUE scars. I don't know if I have them- because I have never shaved my head. Anyone with experience in this area? Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

I haven't done it, but I have talked to other people who have, and their feedback has gone both ways - some very happy with it and others thought it wasn't worth it. One guy shaved the tp hairline off and just uses the system hairline now.

I think the main upside is that it gives you a bit of camouflage for the system, which takes away the paranoia that some guys have - the "what happens if the hairline comes loose without me knowing and everybody can see I'm wearing a piece?" feeling. In reality that scenario just doesn't happen, but saying that and dispelling the paranoia are two different things, so in that sense the but of camouflage can help.

There are 2 possible downsides to it - (1) transplants are always low density compared with a full natural head of hair - it just doesn't seem to be possible for surgeons to transplant hairs as tightly as nature. With a system you can normally have the look of a full natural head of hair, but if the front inch is transplant then you have to go for a much lower density system behind to match; and (2) you have to get a good contour match between the back of the transplanted hairline area and the front of the system, and a consistently accurate placement of the system, otherwise you will get the system sitting on top of the tp hairs or a bald gap, both of which look peculiar.

If you were just thinking about the transplant i think it's debatable whether it's really worth the money - the hairlines on well-made systems are very realistic anyway - but since you already have the transplant why not try it? The worst that can happen is that you will conclude it's not for you, and you haven't lost much. You will need to get a custom piece, and you will have to make sure the front contour is accurate, for the reason described above.

Here's a few examples of where it has been achieved either using natural or tansplanted hairlines:

If your transplant was a good result, i'd say you would be able to get away with using a good quality stock system and just cutting it to size using a craft knife.

I would definitely give it a go before decided to shave all the way down. My issue with hair systems was always the hairline [looks good but not perfect, especially after a few days] and I could not help but feel having a quality transplant upfront with the system up front would achieve a natural look.

Post back with what you decide to do
