Hey everyone.
II went and got a hair piece from HCM in April as I am 36 y/o and at NW6 or most likely 7. I had been shaving my head for over a decade. I left HCM after one month and decided to do it on my own. They were way too expensive, quality was too low for the price and the distance made it very time consuming. After the first month I've been doing this on my own. Unfortunately, I can't put tape on the front hairline because my coordination sucks...and due to that, I have to take the whole thing off every week which turns out to be a 2 hour ordeal. Aside from that, they cut my hair really short so unless I actively make sure I had all around the edges, you can see the tape or base. I notice i'm more self conscious now about the piece and it being detectable than I was when I was bald, about being bald. It doesn't help that the HC hair, which was originally black, has turned brown with blonde highlights over time.

So, due to cost, time and anxiousness about detection, I'm about to go back to my shaved head again. I did (about 10 weeks ago) order replacement hair from hairdirect for the first time which is about to ship to me. If I am able to sell it, that's great. If not, I'll wear it for 2-3 months and then get rid of it. I've attached some pics of the pre-cut style. The rest of the info is as follows:

Color: (black)
Back: 1BT
Temple: 1B2T
Sides: 1B2T

Dimensions:
Shape: Oval
Front to back: 22.5CM
Side to side: 16CM
Partial Cap

Contour/Circumference of head: 58CM

Density: Medium Light (70-90 hairs per sq cm)

Pre-cut style: Images attached.

I paid $500 for this. If the buyer turns out to be local to southern california, they will get along with this all the sealed glues ( have 4 sealed walker 1.5oz glue), tapes and anything else that I may have relating to this.

Thanks for reading and I hope you have a good night.

Another one bites the dust... :( @Vincent777 - I would wear a hair system in a minute if I had a GUARANTEE that I would only have to reapply it once every three weeks and that it would NEVER lift or fall off. May I ask, how is such an active, sea-loving guy like yourself even considering this? I don't mean to sh*t on your parade, but you do realize it's going to be a LOT of work and a LOOOOT of paranoia, no?

@Jimbo5 Ok we'll I realise now that you have something personal against hair systems? What happened to you?

Have never even spent a nickel on a piece, Vince ... and probably never will.

My opinion about them has been formed by research ... and reading the opinions of baldies who use them.

ALL things considered, they're simply not a viable solution to this genetic cheap-shot that we've been dealt...

It's really down to technique from what I researched. You can't just order the best system and expect it to work perfectly. It's like the same hair gel works differently in the hands of different people. I realise people here tend to think it's a lot of work. I have talked to women who wear systems for a long time. Some even shaved and bonded themselves the first time and it worked perfectly. I know a lot of women who only rebond once every two weeks and it takes about an hour and a half each time. I even know a girl from WHLP who started to bond at the age of 16.

Pay for someone to do it for you the first time if you're scared. Or buy the one with clips at the back and lace front that you can glue to your hairline, so you only have to shave a smal section of your hair. That's my game plan.

Another disillusioned wearer, eh.

Can't say that I'm surprised.

Baldies really need to think twice before spending their dough on this 'solution' to hair loss.

Somehow I doubt you'll get any buyers, md.

Might as well just stick that thing on the end of a pole and use it to mop the kitchen floor...

Is that really necessary? I mean I know guys sometiems can be a bit harsh towards each other but seriously?

I have a hair system from a salon and I love it. They use ultra-hold in the summer months, reattach every three weeks, and I have not had a problem. I literally have worked out in the sun for days upon days this year in 100+ degree temps and only started to lose my bond a bit in the back at 3 weeks…all I had to do was shower with cool water and push it back down and it stayed. I am talking moving hundreds of pounds of rock, dirt, and plants - pouring concrete, revamping my landscaping.

This is a viable solution. But it takes energy and research. Right now I know I am not ready for DIY, but I will be at some point. I keep watching videos, talking to my salon, talking to you guys, and will eventually order from HD or someone like them and go about this myself. Yes, it may take some time out of your schedule. I drive 1.5 hours to get mine done every 3 weeks, total time spent every three weeks, 4 hours. Of course, that does not include styling it, and loving every second of having hair again.

Being bald is fine, it’s beautiful, it’s handsome – and if you want to rock it – go for it. I did this for years until I gathered my courage and decided I wanted a change. Wearing hair is not for everyone. There are some things that I cannot do well now that I have hair. Hot tubs and I do not mix, the steam breaks down my bond and my head gets itchy, I don't wear hats any longer...but why would I want to, I have hair!:) But I can do Tae Kwon Do, run, hike, swim, and sweat like crazy. My system is a thin “VR” with a lace front – I love it.

I am still working on styling, I am not the best at this point. It’s up to you folks – in the end you have to live with the choice. Being bald did not work for me – a piece or “system,” is my next best option. If you have problems we have a community here folks – ask questions, search, you will find what you need. Let’s be kind.

Jimbo - You sound like a real prize winner. At least I can say I went forward and tried something, even though it didn't work out. I did all my research but reading about it is one thing and being in the middle of it is another. Let me just tell you that you added no value to this conversation and you sound like a total douchebag.

To everyone else, thank you for your input. I know I could spend more time and money which will probably make this situation much better in the long run but after trying it out (which was my original purpose...test drive and see how it goes) I realize it's just not for me. Fortunately, Hair Direct is an awesome company. I was able to cancel my order with no penalty or charges. Every experience I've had with hair direct in the past few months have been top notch so I would recommend them to anyone looking to purchase or even while doing some research.

Man, I'm glad you're not a moderator here.

You would've banned my *** days ago, eh?

You're right, tho ... I need to work on being a little less harsh, and a little more supportive of the members.

I'll get there, sam ... eventually...

You are bald I take it?

Impossible to get a bond that lasts over a week when you have more then a nw4 worth of hair. The bond will get gummy & break down quick

Shookwun,

Why are you so negative towards systems? What happened to you? Did you used to work in the industry? I see you post many negative things about systems in this forum. If you are so against them – or obviously feel like they are lackluster, then why continue to participate? Do you feel like you are helping others by scaring them away from bad salons…or a process you do not believe in?

There are also terrible salons out there that will steal you blind, so I get that. I understand when a system fails you it is frustrating. A system is just that, a system – many working parts. It can take time to find the right attachment methods, the correct density, even the right style. This business of “hair” has been around forever, men have always wanted a solution to baldness. The systems, pieces, etc. - are much better than used to be – nowhere near perfect, but close enough.

Yes systems are pricey, if you don’t know someone who can cut it in, or don’t have the ability to attach it yourself…and must depend upon a salon…then it gets VERY pricey. Even Hair Direct is expensive, at least to me. When I compared their pricing with my salon plus the service from my salon its pretty close, I do pay more, about 300.00 + gasoline to and from.

I am unsure of what bonding process you are referring too – but my bond has held strong WELL past a week and I am way beyond nw4 - with glue only, and with glue and tape.

I have worn a hair system before. they are not a good solution if you have a lot of hair left on your head.

When you are bald, it is much easier. Exactly... you are almost bald. try wearing a hair system with a full head of hair - NW3

Very difficult. The bond breaks down extremely fast. It lifts after a couple days.

Perhaps you had a good experience, but for many including myself had a horrible experience at a salon.

Systems are very doable when you are bald. A decent head of hair ontop? forget about it. Tons of maintenance.

You would never be able to achieve your 3 week bonds, and commutes if you were in a similar position. Consider yourself very lucky that your body chemistry, and norwood allows you to have such a long bond. I can tell you first hand if you had that bond constantly coming off within a couple days you would be panicking. Would have no other choice but to learn how to DIY

then why not wear a partial? and nobody wears for 3 weeks anyway. it's much healthier for youself and better for the system to reattach weekly

Because he's transplanted his way to a NW2 or better anyway. At that point, no f*****g way does it make sense to put on a system. But I don't think anyone has ever claimed that hair systems make much sense for someone who isn't already a NW4 or worse.
