I am 40 years old and I started to notice hair loss and thinning around and on top of my bang about a year and a half ago.
I've always had a generous mane of fine, curly hair. Oh my, the teasing back in school. Imagine Hermione Granger from Harry Potter, but double the amount of hair. That was me.
After my pregnancy, 7 years ago, I lost a lot of hair but nothing dramatic. Actually, it was easier to manage. I am slowly turning white (about 25% of my hair is white) and I stopped coloring 4 years ago. I had a Japanese perm 3 years ago and a keratin treatment over a year ago.
My blood work revealed that I was low in ferritine, which was corrected last year with supplement (I take iron 3x week). I have been taking a lot of biotine for almost 2 years now. I eat well and exercise a lot (I am a pro dog walker). My family doctor told me to try Rogaine 5%, which I have for a little over a month and got sick of it.
My current regimen is (for the last 2 months):
- Wash my hair with MONAT 3x week
- Sleep overnight with a mix of coconut/castor oil on my scalp 1 to 2x week.
I HATE Monat. It makes my hair feels like straw, super dry, no curls and impossible to manage. The only thing I noticed was that the itch was less intense and I am not losing as much hair as before. No regrowth. I don't see any improvement related to the oil either. I know it takes a little bit of time but I am uncertain this will actually change anything, even in the long term.
I've seen a "hair loss" specialist who has proposed we start laser therapy. At $60 per treatment, twice a week for 3 months (and on-going visits for a year), this would mean no vacation for me this year. I can't impose that to my family.
I am wondering if I should just give up and ignore my new shiny scalp and stop investing time, money and emotional energy into trying to fix this. My grand-mother on my dad's side probably started to wear a wing by the age of 50. As a child, I remember seeing her with no hair at all and I am wondering if this will be my fate. I've noticed my sister, who's 5 years younger, is starting to thinning as well.
I've found products on this page that looks promising but I hesitate of course. I'd like to read about people's thoughts about this. I'll be browsing around for the next little while, although I don't have much to bring on to the table, as I haven't tested and tried a lot of things...
Thank you for letting me vent here
