I am under the impression that both you and Dr Proctor believe free radicals play a big part. I have been doing some research and in 2004 you were talking about using BHT as a topical. Use also mention that arguably the most important ingredients of Dr Proctors Proxiphen-N (I think it was Proxiphen-N) is the SODs.

Do you remember a study where the researchers took a hair from the donor section of the scalp and exposed it to a high level of androgen (DHT I believe, and a really, really high level) and it began to miniturize. Seems like I remember you posting a reply to that and Armando was responding to it as well?

Yes. There's a study which has been cited here a few times that showed that even non-balding hair follicles from the "donor" areas are sensitive to androgens, but much less so than other scalp hair follicles. Even "donor" follicles apparently will miniaturize, if you pump them full of enough androgens! :)

Thanks for remembering...I can't find the study for noth'n (much appreciated if you have it handy to post it)....so, in your theory, the "response" is genetic? Seems to me....that all scalp hair will miniturize in response to too much androgen? Sounds more like a reaction than a response? :dunno:

Quote:
we investigated the influence of T and 5alpha-DHT on proliferation, cell death and bcl-2/bax expression in cultured dermal papilla cells (DPC) from nonbalding scalp regions of healthy volunteers. T and 5alpha-DHT induced apoptosis in DPC in a dose-dependent and time-related manner; in addition a necrotic effect due to T at 10(-5) M was found.

@Bryan

After looking more at Dr Proctors products, what do you think is the science behind SOD working so well?

Would a product like Protandim work really well alongside a topical product that contains SOD?

I would think GliSODin would make more sense to take if SOD is you're going for. Obviously the Protandim has a variety of ingreds that would have other benefits.

Here's this company's http://www.onlyhairloss.com/nanogaine/howitworks.htm t ake on SOD:
Simply put SOD's help movement of nitric oxide to the hair follicle and prevent free radical damage to the hair cells. Blood vessels use nitric oxide to signal the surrounding smooth muscle to relax, thus dilating the artery and increasing blood flow. A good example of this effect is nitroglycerin when given to heart patients is converted into nitric oxide in the body and increases blood flow in the arteries.

If you're looking for a good antioxidant for your scalp try carotenoids. About 47% of our species can't really use them to make vitamin A which results in the accumulations of these compounds throughout the body especially the skin. This accumulation is actually associated with longer life spans AND an increased appearance of attraction. Apparently across most races that odd orange skin tone change associated with elevated levels of carotenoids actually increases ratings of attractiveness across multiple races.

An apparent mechanism for this would be that with a shift from utilizing carotenoids for vitamin A production towards deriving more of it from straight vitamin A animal sources, the non-converters were able to use the carotenoids for their potent free radical scavenging properties instead. eventually the visual markers associated with this altered method of utilization became associated with the increased sexual fitness afforded by the change.

If free radicals are bad, and they are as we know, doesn't the oxidative process cause free radicals? So using Miconazole Nitrate increases oxygen to the scalp so....doesn't that mean increased freee radicals in scalp and circulation as it causes head aches in many?
