Foam ate hairline??

So after blaming propecia for my sudden hairloss on my hairline, I am now thinking it is the rogaine foam to blame. After all, the thinning and receding is only in the places where I apply the foam at night.

The propecia started working out great. I started to apply the foam about 1 month into the propecia treatment which I started about 3months ago. In the past 1-1.5 months, my hairline, especially my left side, has easily gone back 1/4 of an inch. My hairline was almost completely straight across a month ago. Now it is turning into a severe M.

If I stop the rogaine now and continue propecia, will the hair that I lost on minoxidil be regrown by the propecia??

Foam has been known to eat hairlines. Just view the poll on this forum here -->

Its a fairly even balance. However I really think the people that experienced the eating of there hairlines stopped using the minoxidil when this occured because they were afraid of losing more. Foam almost completely destroyed my hairline, but i kept applying it because i had nothing else to lose. Keeping up applications is the best thing i ever did. After about 12 months it came back with a vengence you just have to be patient. It takes 12-24 months to reap the benefits from Rogaine (imo).

I wish someone would come up with a good reason why so many people had their hairlines "eaten by the foam or even minoxidil"? There has to be something logical to explain this but no one has ever come up with a good enough theory yet.

In my opinion it's simply a bad minoxidil shed brought on by the superior absorption of the foam and these folks just couldn't ride it out. There's a poster on HLH who claims that the foam destroyed his hair, yet he's just posted new pictures that shows a clear improvement. He thinks it was revived by going back to the liquid and I say it was simply regrowth from the shed.

beaner, you think it may take up to a year to show good results from a bad shed?

I'm not sure, but I don't see why not. Those with male pattern baldness also have shortened growth phases and it may be several cycles before the new hair is able to grow long enough to be cosmetically acceptable....maybe some are growing back, but shed again quickly. There's also going to be a period between the time the hair sheds and a new hair emerges from the follicle----it's not a quick process by any means. With that said, I really can't say with 100% certainty, but I'm sure everyone is going to be different. Look at those that have had a telogen effluvium for whatever reason. Granted, this is an extreme example of a shed, but for the most part these folks recover 100% and I've no doubt it can take longer than a year for that to happen.

I only really noticed having one bad minoxidil shed (from basically overdosing on it with about 4ml a day) that started in the latter half of 2005 (probably fall) and I can honestly say I didn't have what I would call a complete recovery until Summer 2006, so that was about 9 months for me. It's funny because if I didn't find this forum, I wouldn't have even realized it was a shed (I had no clue), I just remembered that my hair used to look like crap for a few months out of the year.

From your other posts, I thought you didn't like the foam...said it made the thin area look thinner. I was surprised to read you're still doing foam and that your hair is coming back w/a vengeance. Congrats, and could you please tell us more about your regrowth...location, density. Also, did your shed stop ? I've been foaming since 8/18/07 and it just keeps getting worse...hairline and temples shot to hell. I wont give up, though. Like you, I feel I've got nothing to lose, and I'm wearing wigs (I'm a gal)

Hey Sunnyone1. Yes I started Foam in Feb 2007. In that time you can certainly read from my post history that I have vented quite openly about some terrible shedding periods and moments when my hair just looked completely GONE. It was so thin around the temples and crown, I had almost lost all hope (this was around november last year) So that was about 9 months into using the foam. But about 2 months prior to November I decided to shave my hair down and be really specific about where exactly i apply the foam. I used 2 mirrors to achieve this. I think prior to this i was being far to inconsisant about where i was applying it and just guessing (when it came to the crown). Anyway I dont want exagerrate my current success but its defintely improved (and i say improved with a small i ). My hairline has not grown back but the area that I still had left (the area that was becoming thinner) has definately increased in density making my hair much more managable when dong hairstyles. My advice to you is definately dont give up, give it a full 12 months. Its been 11 months for me now and its only in past month that i have noticed a definite improvement, its certainly not worse and at the very least u can expect maintaince and for me that is worth more than gold.
