Basically, I'm curious about the history of baldness in your family. What members lost hair, in what pattern, how quickly, when it started, how similar/different it is to your loss, etc.

My dad is a NW6 and so is everyone else on that side of the family. Their hairline usually starts receding at around 16 but they tend to bald very slowly. My dad didn't hit NW3 until he was about 26 and only became a NW6 at around 40. They all inheritted the gene from their dad, as far as I know everyone on my father's mother's side of the family kept their hair.

There is no baldness on my mom's side of the family. My grandfather had deep temples, but he died with a thick head of hair. My uncle has some thinning that started around the time he was 50.

I'm 18 with very, very thick hair like my maternal grandfather and a low hairline. Hopefully I won't end up as bald as my dad and will continue to take after my mom's side of the family.

I would like to get as many in depth responses as possible. :)

Sounds like you're in a good position. People say you can get hair loss from either side but my belief is that it mostly comes from the mother's side. It's possible you didn't even inherit your father's hair loss gene. There is 0 hair loss on my father's side but my mother's father was bald and it looks like I got his gene.

Well, my father is probably an Norwood 5.5 by now where he's 55 years old. He had all his hair until he was about 30 where he started diffusing, and since then it's been a pretty slow progress. My uncle on the other hand (my dad's brother) was a full blown Norwood 6 at very young (like 25) and now he's an Norwood 6.5. My father's dad is probably an Norwood 5.5 at 86. I don't know about my fathers maternal granddad, but I figure he had hairloss of some sort aswell since my fathers mother has quite thin hair and a small bald spot since 60.

As for my mother's side, her dad receded to an NW2 at about 20 and has kept his hair for all his life, he's now 85 years old. (his temples might have become a bit deeper than when he was 20) My mother's mother has nice thick curly hair like my mother, but I think my grandmas father was like an Norwood 3-4 judging from pics. My grandmom's mom also had exceptionally thick curly hair.

Me myself, well I'm 17 years old and have always had a quite high hairline. I'm probably an Norwood 1.5 (maybe an NW1 on my left temple), but i'm safe to say, that I have NEVER been an NW1, temples were alway going up a bit, right moreso than the left. I don't really see noticeable change since I was like 14, but it's hard to say since I only started paying attention to my hair about 2 years ago.

I have a half brother (dad's side) who suffered from aggresive hairloss since he was 18, now at 29 he's an NW5. Note though that his mothers father was also bald.
I also have a 'real' brother who's 14, with great thick curly hair and straight NW1.

But needless to say I'm hoping for my maternal grandfather's hair genes.

You get male pattern baldness from your mother but you can get any number of other conditions from your father that can cause hair loss. Best of luck.

I find my dads story strange. He is a Norwood 7 at 50. His hairloss began at the crown in a non-diffuse pattern at the age of 16. Then the temples at around age 20 began. They met in the middle, and as bald as a cue ball at age 26.

Is it like that in every case? If so, I'm set for life and have nothing to worry about. My dad has pretty similar loss to his dad though, and so do all of his brothers. It looks like he inheritted every bit of male pattern baldness he could from his dad's side.

Its not just from the mothers side! Its like ANY genetic trait you are a mixture of both parents genes.

Bolded to help out those who apparently failed at reading it the first time.

Well, I thought I might have been losing hair...but now I have reconsidered after studying many of these topics and symptoms. I haven't had the classic symptoms and I'm going to be 42 later this month. I just had to vary my shampoo and my combing styles.

Anyway, my maternal grandpa went quite bald early in his 20s. He sported a horseshoe by his 40s. Prophesied that I would not go bald...but to watch out for "bad combs." RIP.

Of three brothers, of whom I am the eldest, my second youngest shaves his head and I never ask him why (but my ex-sister in law told my wife he's going bald). So I might conclude he's going bald. My youngest bro still has thick wavier hair.

My second youngest bro recently. He's still a good-looking dude, quite more successful than I, socially and professionally. But we're happy in life in our own ways. Balding hasn't affected him.

Me...just a week or so ago, just shy of turning the big FOUR-TWO.

On my dad's side...my grandpa had full hair and decent hairline into his early 70s. His hair did not gray until his 70s.

My dad himself has decent hair...and he doesn't take care of himself. No balding, now mid 60s and only slightly graying. But of my three uncles on that side, only one is balding and graying (and his son is showing signs of diffuse thinning). The other uncles have/had thick hair. The youngest is now 51 and has full hair, the other passed away due to aneurysm at 44 but had very full thick hair.

And that's the family pattern/history in a nutshell.

Well I hope I got my Dad's genes. He is fifty and still has a lot of hair. My Mom's father was almost completely bald and even her hair is thinning but not really noticeably. Hmm...makes me wonder if I'm in for a rough future.

True but keep in mind that you get the X chromosome from your mom and the Y from your dad. The X is much bigger and carries more genetic info so men are actually genetically a tiny bit more like their moms. If hair loss is on the X chromosome you can only get it from your mom but I think in some cases you can get it from the y. Who knows? :dunno: Scientist don't seem to understand it.

Dad's side: only his brother is bald, whilst his other brother has receded temples. Mum's side: no one is bald.

So you can see how unlucky i am :thumbdown2: the brother who is bald, has a son who is a year older than me, he has a thick head of hair, a great hair line and no signs of any future hair loss.

Maternal grandpa: NW4a at 90+ years old.
Maternal uncle 1: NW2 at 60
Maternal uncle 2: NW5 at 60.

Paternal grandfather: NW1 at 90+ years old.
Father: NW1 at 60.
Uncle 1: NW1.5 at 50.
Uncle 2: NW2 hairline, but significantly diffuse all over.

Me: NW2.5 at 29.
My bro: NW3 at 35.

Gotta say it really burns my *** that my dad has more hair than me. I just hope they'll have something better than finasteride in 15 years so my son won't have to deal with this sh*t... :shakehead:
