Hi.

I'm 23 and have taken finasteride for 2 years, now I'm on dutasteride.

I want to know if there is any chance that these medications can cause infertility. I'm aware of hypochondriacs and scare-stories with their scaremongering but want to know if someone could supply reliable information about this factor? Does it have any basis?

Thanks.

No, the 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors cannot cause infertility.

I have a prescription for Dutasteride, and it comes with a sheet that lists possible sexual side effects including erectile dysfunction, lower libido, painful/swollen testicles, etc. It says nothing about infertility however.

So you should be fine! :D

This has been asked to Dr Rassman on baldingblog. There is a chance but its low. More likely with dutasteride than finasteride due to it being the stronger of the two.

I'm surprised by all the misleading information.

To the OP, yes, it can very well cause infertility. But it shouldn't be permanent on discontinuation for 3-6 months.

Whether or not sperm parameters get back to baseline is questionable, but should be possible.
