Im a diffuse thinner and it has worked EXCELLENT. Fina has stabilized my hair but since I started using minoxidil back in november, my hair has gotten much thicker.

Ryan,

How long did it take on minoxidil for you to start seeing results and thickening of the hair? 3 months? 4 months? 5 months?

Also, did you shed in the beginning and lose a lot of hair before it got better?

Thanks

Well, I started this november, so ive been using it for almost 4 months.

It's hard to say exactly when it got thicker, cuz I bought minoxidil foam. It was 2 hard 2 apply on my long hair, so I buzzed it. The first 2/3 months I kept it short, and when it grew I just noticed it (now using kirkland). I mean it could be the different length, but my hair deffinitely has gotten THICKER, u cant see through it at all anymore (except when it gets fatty, cuz of the kirkland).
Even when im under terrible light, u cant see scalp anymore, its awesome

Hey King, just a word of caution. I am a diffused thinner too (pics and complete story coming up within a few weeks). I started with minoxidil only and was on it for 6 months before I started finasteride. I was on minoxidil (generic) for a year and it left my hair in shambles. Constant shedding, dry skin, bloated face, headaches etc.

Quit Nov-dec last year and am only on finasteride.

My advice, first stabilise your hairloss with finasteride. Then after a year start minoxidil , because you won't be able to handle the shed from both the meds and you won't know if finasteride is working or not as your hair will always looks thin from the constant shedding. I'm assuming that you may respond similarly as I am a diffused thinner too.

I have just started using xandrox 5 % (0.25 ml once a day ) only along my hairlone and for the first time after losing my hairline to preivous minoxidil applications, I can see a few hairs growing.

I know everyone reacts differntly and it may not be the same for you, but its safer to err on the side of caution. Just build it up slowly

I think just try minoxidil first, I dont think your hair will get worse (it can in some cases, but thats a minority i think). If it improves/stabilizes, continue. If your satisfied you can stay on minoxidil only. If not, add something, like finas.

I started on finas first. After a shed of 3 months my hair stabilized. But when I started using minoxidil, my hair just improved drastically, and im now regretting that I didnt start with minoxidil first and then added finas when nescessery. I thought that finas was far better than minoxidil, but I think fina is more for maintaining and minoxidil can help better with regrowth.

minoxidil gains can disappear quickly if you don't have finasteride going at the same time

Can you back that up?

People on this forum tend to put the most amphasize on finasteride, but I think minoxidil can be great on its own, and it has been with lots of people.

Huh? I don't see how that works then..

Quitting finasteride will make it possible to lose the hair you maintained/gained with finasteride. I do not think quitting finasteride will make you lose the hair you gained with minoxidil, quitting minoxidil would for sure though.

If quitting finasteride would make you lose the hair you gained with minoxidil, why wouldnt one be able to quit minoxidil after regain of hair and maintain those new hairs with finas only?

Makes no sense if you ask me, but if you or anyone can back it up, please do :)

correction: quitting minoxidil and finasteride at the same time will make you loose all the hair gained from the meds.

quitting minoxidil but continuing with finasteride will result in a shed(s) but atleast some hair will grow back with finasteride, so net net you will get some hair back.

Bottomline, do not stop finasteride. Add minoxidil after your hairloss has stabilised with finasteride.

I'm saying this based on my own experience.

Gains from minoxidil are quick but also disappear quicky due to frequent sheds.

Gains from finasteride are slow (upto a year sometimes) but the sheds are not as dreadful and as frequent as minoxidil.

I guess if your are looking for quick gains with minoxidil (and not patient), then you have a price to pay in the form of "frequent" sheds.

I only use minoxidil foam and nizoral and although I can't say for sure if there was regrowth, I can say my hair got thicker in general. I say this because when I stopped, it got crappy again so I knew there was progress.
