Does it ever get any better?

Over the course of the last 6 months or so, I have noticed that my hair has thinned out dramatically. I use to have thick hair, lots of it. But now, even when my hair is in a ponytail, it is about the size of dime in thickness. I saw my doctor a few months back, and he stated that my hair thinning was probably due to stress, and that some blood work would probably find out what was going on with me. 2 weeks later, everything came back negative, but my hair didn’t stop thinning. I feel like everyone in my family is denying the fact that I am losing my hair. My husband says that I am just paranoid and that it is all in my head. Every time I state that I am losing my hair, I get the same response, which is “Don’t be ridiculous, your hair looks fine, it isn’t thinning. I am depressed, I feel alone, and I hate the fact that I find myself looking at other women and evaluating the thickness of their hair compared to my own. I’m even beginning to believe that I am just being paranoid, but then I look in the mirror and my hair tells me different. Does it ever get any better?

grab the bull by the horns

hey there,
you're not alone, I too am suffering from dramatic hair loss in only 2 1/2 months i've shedded loads of hair. I too had to endure the whole 'your being ridiculous, your hair is fine' crap. Then I went camping and when my hair was wet my boyfriend saw my scalp all over and said that I should go to a dr.
This is very important.
Do lots and lots of research on hair loss, right now is a good time for you to study up and find a good dermatologist (make sure they know specifically about women's hair loss, I made the unfortunate mistake of just going to ANY dermatologist to simply found out they were inept in this matter) I've gone to about 6 so far and think i am happy with this one.
I don't know what blood tests you were given but it's important that you read this site and find out the specifics of exactly what to test.
I went to a dr. who sent me to a dermatologist who didn't look at my blood tests results and didn't do any kind of follow up. This wasted roughly 4 weeks of heavy shedding. I then went to another derm who prescribed me crap (which I didn't take) he said I didn't need blood tests or any other testing for that matter. I then took matters in my own hands and got the first dr. to fax to my now dr. who just by looking at the results determined my iron count to be ridiculously low (she was appaled the first dr. didn't see this)
She tested me for loads of other things (PCOD) and determined that my hormone levels(testosterone) were incredibly high (hair loss) I still havent' got my test results (I get them this week) but it looks like my ovaries are fine and that it's more than likely my adrenals. So very impatiently i wait to find out what medication to take while i shed like mad.

It's very important that you do something right away and don't take no for an answer. Dermatologist along with other dr.'s aren't necessarily well versed in this area so you have to be. As i stated before make lots of calls to find someone who's up to date in female alopecia.

here are some websites.
keratin.com
hairsite.com
thebaldtruth.com
regrowth.com

good luck and don't get discouraged, trust me you won't be doing yourself any favors.

Thanks so much for responding

It makes me feel alot better knowing that I am not alone in this. It is just a really hard reality to grasp. I never thought that I would be losing my hair at 23. I have made an appointment with a dermatologist and hopefully she can find out what is going on with me, hair shedding and all. I just hope that I will be getting my life back soon. Thanks again.

I'm glad you have an appt with a dermatologist, please make sure that they know about women's hair loss. I know I sound like I'm beating a dead horse on this matter, however you'll just waste your time and alot of hair in the meantime. You have to actually ask if they know. Call around and make appts to many dr.'s that know about this and then when you get one that's closer to date, cancel the rest.
good luck

I'm considering going to another derm, too. One that specializes in female hair loss. The last derm sent me to an endocrinologist, who said that all my levels were normal. I have scalp pain also. I told the derm this, but she didn't seem to think it was of any concern. I thought that she would do a scalp biopsy or something, but she didn't. I have to pay for these things out of my pocket, so I need a quality doctor to give me a real diagnosis! I've also heard that you can go to a gynecologist for this, too. Is this true? :?:

Hi. I'm 19 and have had 2 periods of dramatic hair loss within the last 3 years. I did have incredibly thick hair and now have less than one quarter of what i had. I've also been to numerous doctors who dismissed my problem as they did not think i had one. I've also gone to a dermatologist who could be described as no less than a jerk and have been passed on to an endocrinologist as i had a slightly high level of testosterone produced in my adrenal gland. I have now been taking an anti-androgen called Aldactone (think thats right) for about 2 weeks. Apparently it binds to the testosterone hormone and receptors for the hormone so that it is not absorbed so strongly in the body. I haven't noticed any changes yet but apparently it will take at least 3 months. Has anyone else tried this kind of treatment? :?: Although most other doctors/specialists have not given me any hope that my hair will have any chance of growing back (only loss slowing or stopping) the endocrinologist seemed to think this may actually help it grow back. I'm sure everyone here feels the same and has said many times 'i just want my hair back'. i feel the same and i hope everyone finds something that helps them because it is a really distressing problem. Please dont ignore it like i did for so long. I actually put it off for over 2 years because i am incredibly terrified of needles, but put my foot down this year and went and got one..two.. Not without tears of course. Anyway, i will let u all know how i go and good luck to you!

depressed

I am 28 and I noticed my hair greatly thinning about 2 months ago. Prior to that I had a normal amount of hair. As soon as I noticed a change in thickness, I bought a bottle of Rogaine and began using that. So far no results. I am still losing a substantial amount of hair. Now it doesn't matter which way I comb my hair, I can still see my scalp. I did some general research, then set out for the Dr. My Dr., as well as myself, thought that I had a thyroid deficiency.....not so. I am due to go back in a few days for more blood work. I prayed that it was my Thyroid so at least I would have a cause and possible cure. Now that I have found out that it is not, I am so depressed. I cry all of the time. I don't know what to do. I am 28, I am not supposed to be losing my hair. Everybody in my family avoids the situation. I have become somewhat of a hermit because I don't want my friends to notice my hair loss. I feel as though I am at the end of my rope. I just found a site containing a product called Thymuskin, it is supposed to regrow hair without side effects. Has anybody else heard of this??

Hello Mich
It made me really sad to hear that u are so depressed. I lost HEAPS of my hair when i was only 16 so i know exactly how you feel right now, as do so many other women out there. There was a long period of time where there wasn't much else i could think about but my hair, comparing myself to every other woman i saw, and basically totally freaking myself out. I tell you what, it doesn't help, though i understand it is hard to calm yourself down. Now i dont know what your hair looks like, but the truth is that you probably notice it yourself far more than other people do. I know i do anyway. I'm not trying to say that u dont have a problem because im sure u know your own body. All i hope is that you dont hide yourself away because of it. I'm sure you are a beautiful person (inside & out) and no matter what you look like there are soooo many people out there who love u just as you are. Find someone close to you and let it all out, tell them everything, be it your doctor, friend, family whatever. It might surprise you how supportive some people can be. It feels alot better get it out instead of letting it kill you on the inside. I'm really glad that you are seeking advice now and not later like me. Keep trying because from what i hear there are many people out there who have been able to help themsleves. The more research you do, the more empowered you will feel, its good to know all the options causes etc out there. If your doctor cant help you, please get reffered to a specialist (maybe dermatologist/endocrinologist) depending on what your test results say. Here is a list of things you should be tested for which may be contributing to your hair loss.
Hormone levels (DHEAS,Testosterone, Androstenedione, Prolactin, Follicular Stimulating Hormone, and Leutinizing Hormone).
Serum Iron, Serum Ferritin, TIBC (Total Iron Binding capacity)
Thyroid Stimulating Hormone
VDRL
Complete Blood Count (CBC)

I hope your hair loss stops, my hair loss spurts lasted for about 2 months each and has stopped now (touch wood). Now i'm concentrating on getting it back. Keep going I'm sure you'll get somewhere. Just remember that there are so many different causes, so dont give up because it wasn't your thyroid (i was disheartened too when my results came back negative for this) and be prepared for a few more tests. Good luck!

Anne, Thank you so much for the words of encouragement. I don't think that people with hair realize how much of a struggle it is to face another day with thinning hair. It is nice to have resources like this web site and friends like you to turn to when it all becomes overwhelming. I have copied down the tests to have my Dr. order, my appointment is tomorrow. Guess I will hold my breath until then. I will try to keep you posted, as I hope that you do. I will pray for both of US. I hope that your remission continues and that your growth goes wild. :) Thank you again for your encouraging words. Keep me posted!

Anne: Blood work is back

Hi Anne. Blood work is back.....and nothing. I had the CBC and a metabolic profile. When I went to the Dr. he initially wasn't going to do anything, then he agreed to order a CBC and the profile. I asked him to do some hormone levels, such as the testonsterone and estrogen and he said that they wouldn't help, were expensive and refused to order them. I was a wreck. I went to another Dr. the same day who initially didn't want to order the tests either. I told him that I had been researching this and really thought that it would be a good idea, he then looked in his medical book and agreed to order them. I have not had them drawn yet but I will this week. The rogaine still is not working. I am still having ups and downs, just getting frustrated. I think I am going to make a dermatology appointment tomorrow too. See how that goes. Anyway, thought I would keep you posted. How are you making out in your battle???

Oh Man! Why do doctors have to be such jerks??!!!
I cant believe that he refused to get them done, how ignorant of him. I probably didn't mention this, and probably should have; i got different tests done with my doctor and dermatologist. I got the basic things like iron, folate, zinc, thyroid etc done at the doctor, and only when i went to the dermatologist did i get tested for hormone levels, and more specific things tested. Sorry i cant remember what i got tested where. I think it is a really good idea for you to go to a dermatologist, they have a much better idea than a normal doctor about this stuff. I also went on to an endocrinologist afetrwards as my problem turned out to be testosterone related.
Dont get disheartened by ignorant doctors! I think male doctors are much harder to work with, maybe i've just had some bad ones though. I was lucy enough to have a really caring and thorough female doctor who encouraged me to get to the end of it. I think that hairloss is really a problem that needs to be looked at by a specialist of some kind. Normal doctors dont seem to have the right expertise in this area. I dont claim to be an expert, but if some of my experience can help guide you then i will be happy. So if i were you i would really keep trying, definitely get tested for hormone levels, and anything else that a specialist may recommend. My testosterone levels were only slightly higher apparently (normal is 3.5, i am 4.3, a high level is above 5.) but this is the only reason that can be concluded to have made any impact on my hair. It only takes a small abnormality in levels of somthing in your body to throw it a bit out of whack, well i think anyway. I've got the most helpful, and positive information from reading these kind of discussion boards on the internet. Reading real life stories, hints, causes etc from people who have gone through the same things as me means more to me than anything a doctor can recite from a textbook, because i dont think they truly understand. I dont think that u are alone in the area of rogaine not working for you. From what i've heard, it works really well for some, and not at all for others. I personally haven't tried it myself. I suppose it all comes down to the cause of what you are experiencing, and finding the right treatment for it. Stay positive, you ARE getting there. I suggest you do book and appointment with a dermatologist, and keep trying because there is help out there for you, its just finding it thats the hard part! I'm still not sure if my medication (Aldactone, contains spirolactone) is making my hair grow back yet, but it is a few months before i am expected to get results. I'm pretty confident though, i've heard some really positive personal and scientific reviews on it. Oh god, i've just written an essay. Good luch Mich! Seeya! Smile!!!

very frustrated

I have been losing my hair for about a year and a half now. At first my doctors blamed my hairloss on my thyroid disease. I had Graves disease (hyperthyroidism) for about 4 years before it was diagnosed and was very sick. AFTERcorrecting my thyroid problem my hair started falling out, it's been falling out off and on ever since. If I pulled all my hair back into a ponytail it would probably be about as thick as a dime. I've been to 5 doctors and 2 dermatologists and all keep telling me I have telogen effluvium and it will just "get better". But I'm not convinced because every time it seems to start improving it will just start getting worse again after a few months. I'm really frustrated because I feel like there must be an underlying cause of this problem! Everything I've read says that when they underlying cause of the problem is corrected your hair gets better. But my doctors have done a million tests and they all come back normal. I feel like they must be missing something because hair doesn't just fall out for no reason. When it gets bad, like it is now, it's practically the only thing I think about. It seems like everyone in must be noticing my incredibly thin hair. I used to have really long hair, down to my waist, and I have had to cut it all short to my head because it is so thin now. I cry everyday and sometimes it's all I can do to get out of bed. I'm absolutely miserable, and I feel like knowone wants to help me. I just keep getting bounced around from doctor to doctor, all of them telling me they can't help me. I'm only 27 years old I shouldn't be losing my hair! I would do anything to have it back! Will it ever get better?

I experienced sudden hair loss, mostly in the top front and upper left of my scalp. I freaked!! No one tells women they can lose their hair, too. The subject is nearly ignored by all and is TABOO.
It was brought on by a sudden severe bout with seborrhea (?) and the stress associated with nearing retirement, i think. Also, I had begun a lose dose HRT six months earlier and had just turned 50. So, there were several changes in my lifestyle that could contribute to my hair loss. I had blood work done and the only thing that was off is my DHEA level. I am told by my derm. that this alone would not necessarily cause hair loss. So, I really don't know more now that when this all began. But, I suspect stress.

With the help of this site, I began to research, other remedies, such as crinagen, folligen, etc.. I bought the Folligen and after about two weeks, shedding STOPPED. It is now 2-1/2 months. There's no regrowth, yet, but at least I don't see more thinning. My scalp is a lot healthier. I just wonder if it will ever regrow!!!!
Maybe it is time for you to take a chance with some of the products listed in the product reviews on this site. Many people seem to have good results with them. In fact, my dermatolgist recommended Tricomin, although I finally decided on Folligen.
Good luck

Hi there - just curious - what were your DHEA results - I got my blood work done and mine seems high - but what do I know (the range is 1.8 to 10.3) my results were 7.9......thoughts?

Dear Too Young,

I looked at your previous posts and see you are in your late twenties. Your DHEA should be high. From what I've read, it is at its high point in late teens and twenties and by the time you are in your eighties, you produce about 10 to 20% of what it was when you were young.
I am 51 and my DHEA score was 7.7, clearly high for my age. My derm didn't think that in itself would cause my hair loss. I keep hearing about hormone ratios. Maybe yours is out of whack.

TotaldispHAIR wrote
Check out this book: What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About PreMenopause -- Balance Your Hormones and Your Life from Thirty to Fifty. By John Lee. It is really really good and has given me so much understanding about how my low estrogen/progesterone levels may be causing my hair loss, not to mention other things that I didn't realize were due to it before.
I just got his book on menopause and I am intrigued, can't wait to read it!!
Here's Dr. Lee's website: http://www.johnleemd.com/
And another interesting site: http://www.hormonehelpny.com/

I TOTALLY believe my hair loss is hormone related!! Not only do I have hair loss, but low libido and itchy skin. I am ready to search out a doctor, maybe an endo to get a handle on this. Enough is enough.
I don't know if you are on BCP, or have been. I am on lose dose hrt, FEMHRT. We keep taking hormones to fix other issues and don't know the side effects. And then, there are hormones in the meat we eat. No wonder our bodies complain. (I kinda got off on a tangent.)
I hope this has been some help, to at least give you places to get more information.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Hey Mariejoe:

So what you think is my DHEA at 7.9 is norm....I guess I won't know anything until I check my estrogen.....I am not on the pill - I actually tried it last year for one month and stopped because it gave me such horrible side-effects....could that mean that my body isn't used to estrogen. I tried Diane 35 and was very depressed, achey, extremely tired, bloated, my breats were killing me, chest pain you name it.....my doctor couldn't beleive how crappy it made me feel - but of course she didn't dig any deeper.

My concern is that (as per my research) DHEA produces the DHT that can cause hairloss in woman....as it affects the scalp....ahhh...I can't wait until August to see the Derm - my heads getting shinier and shinier on a daily.

Too Young,
I'm not a doctor. But certainly your reading should be closer to normal than my reading, considering our ages.
From what I understand, all your hormones have to be in the proper ratio. Not just estrogen, but also progesterone. It could be that your hormone levels are not in sync and that might be why you had a bad effect with the BCP. If your derm doesn't give you satisfaction, try anothe, or maybe a endocrinologist.

From what I remember reading, if you don't have the right amounts of estrogen and progesterone,
there is androstenedione, an alternative precursor for the production of other adrenal cortical hormones. Androstenedione conveys some androgenic (male-like) properties, in this case, male pattern hair loss.
(quote from http://www.power-surge.com)It's kind of gobbledy-gook to me, but those androgens can cause hair loss.

Go to these links for more info: http://www.hormonehelpny.com/column/alopecia.htm
for more on Androgenic Alopecia and
http://www.keratin.com/
Whatever research you do before you see the doctor is to your benefit. :)

i can relate

I can relate to so many posts here. The ones about crying all day. About being able to think of nothing but this hairloss all day. How you would compare yourself to everyone you see.... I'm constantly looking at other women's heads. I feel so discouraged by this. My hair was thin and fine to begin with. So I'm afraid this process will proceed very rapidly for me, before I can get answers or help.

In 5 weeks I'm seeing an endo... but it's a long time to wait. And a few days later I have an appointment with a new derm. I had to call 8 people to get one that has extensive experience with female hairloss.

I'm just so tired of being told to use Rogaine. Doesn't that just work on the symptom of a problem that should be fixed? Is hairloss perfectly normal for a 36 yo female? Because if it isn't, shouldn't they be curious and want to find out WHY? And then fix that? Each day as I approach the shower I begin to cry.... and I'm being such a bear with my children.

All I keep thinking about is how embarrassed they are going to be to even be seen with me soon. Kids are often embarrassed by their parents anyways! And I need to give them my attention during the day, and function ..... but I can't.
