Hi,

I go by the name of 'chancer' i have been on this forum since January this year (08) but only started any hair treatment three months ago (Beginning of April). Before then i just read as much info as i could on the treatments available and tried to digest all the info from this forum.

So in April i eventually started treatment... here’s my story....

this is a picture of my hair 4 years ago when i was 27... i was probably a very thick NW2... in fact i don’t think i ever was a NW1 not even when i was 10.
age27.jpg

Hah... those were the boy band days, with my 'Oasis' style, Manchester rock look...

It’s also worth noting how dark in colouration my hair was back then. ive inherited my mothers auburn hair (ok red!!). when i was a baby up to being a toddler it was typical ginger looking and light in pigmentation, but as i got into my teens it darkened up to a very dark auburn. im not sure if that had anything to do with my dad having very dark hair? (also he has very little hairloss probably NW2.5 even now) but has the next pics will show the miniaturization of my hair regressed it to the colour and texture it was when i was a baby. In fact looking at old pics of my around 18 months old shows the same hairline i have in these pics!!!! i really have lost a lot in just 4 years...

these were taken a few weeks before i started treatment and i cant tell you how gut wrenchingly awful it was to look at these pics and accept whats on show>>>

And so i decided to take action... i read as much as i could... Turns out genetics arent on your side to start out if you have auburn hair... i read stats that reported the average male with dark hair has 100,000 hair follicles, blondes have 10% more and people with red hair have 10% less.... to i was about 10,000 follicles down on the average joe before i even had hairloss !! fantastic.... I also read and then publically observed how people with alot of hairloss like me generally have high levels of DHT. People with high levels of DHT tend to have a awful lot of body hair and are naturally stocky in muscular build. Well im neither of these, I have always been very thin and scrawny with no upper body muscle, and my body is practically hairless, I can count the couple of hairs I have on my chest, my arms and legs aren’t very hairy whatsoever, infact I only started shaving properly when I was about 21 !!! And even now I cant really grow a proper beard, its still “bumfluff-like†even at 31… So i guess i have very little DHT but at 27 the male pattern baldness gene kicked in and made my hair ultra sensetive to the DHT i do have....

i went to Boots (uk store) to see their 'hair retention programme' specialist to get a prescription for the finasteride, buying it from them is expensive (£30 for 1 months supply) But this way at least i know im getting the real thing!! They Classed me as an NW4.

Here is the regimen i took up...

500mg Silca (mineral) every day
5000mg MSM (mineral) everyday
1000 Vitamin C everyday
120mg pure cod liver oil, inc omega-3, vitamins A,D & E x1 per day
minoxidil foam 5% x2 per day - 8am / 8pm
Nizoral 2% shampoo ever second day
x1 - 1mg propecia per day (in evening)
15 min head massage before bed.

here are some pics after three months, the first thing i noticed was after week 1 of treatment i didn’t get and loose hairs on my hands when washing, i used to count around 30 hairs on one hand per wash, now im lucky to find 1. My hair started to darken to its dark auburn colour as it used to be up until a few years ago. I have regrown some hair in the vertex (crown) and also the sides, and hopefully its thickening up everywhere else in general.... also have lots of very fine veleous hairs on my temples, they have been there for 2 months now, but haven’t grown longer or into terminal hairs... i hope this will be the case....

at this stage three months into treatment i'd like to think im on my way to becoming NW3. and my hope is with continued treatment coupled with testing out follica's new theories and can get some temple and front hairline regrowth to pull it back to NW2.5.

Anyway i hope this slight success after three months helps anyone out there, especially those with red hair as i have never seen a success story from a red head before....

Cheers

Chancer...

Looks like good progress... my biggest jump came between 3 and 4 months. Good luck!

Damn I wish I'd started treatment when I was 34.

Great progress so far! Have you experienced any shedding at all? I'm just getting started on a regimen and I hope I can get quick results like this. Are those red lines on your side view showing regrowth in that area?

Hi maddhatter...

yes those red lines i drew on the pics represents growth... it was pretty much bald in those areas before treatment...

Side Effects:

Luckily no... but boy did i worry about it... when i first started treatment... did i feel a bit dizzy when i stood up then? that must be the miniox... is my penis not quite as erect as normal? that must be the finasteride...

I worried like hell about side effects... for a few weeks then i realised, nothing had changed.... I got ball-ache for the first week on finasteride, but that went, erections are fine, sex drive is fine.... breasts are fine...lol

one benefit from my regime is that im regular on the toilet everyday, ive always gone 3 sometimes four days between toilet visits for a number two... but now its everyday and very healthy... im not sure if thats is due to the MSM or VIT C or combination of both...

Also i have had no shedding, though i appreciate its early days....

That's great that you got that much regrowth on the sides like that. Were you applying a lot of rogaine directly to that area and how long did it take for the hair to start growing there? My hair is similar to where you started, but not quite as severe. If they classified you at NW4 then I would probably be a 3.5 or so. I started my Minoxidil and Nizoral already, I'm just waiting for my Finastercide to arrive. My hair slowly thinned from 18 until about 27 and the last three years things have gotten to the point where I have to do something. I'm 30 now and I'm just hoping I didn't wait too long. I think I may have to add some supplements and vitamins to my regimen along with switching to the foam.

Deffo get yourself MSM & VIT C... this really does help... my hair grows from number 2 shave to number 4 length in 2 weeks... it really does speed everything up... so i think it helps the treatment accelerate... also my fingernails... i have to cut them everyweek... before i could go like a month before they got long enough to cut...

Im 31 myself... though i didnt notice hairloss till i was 27... i did have long hair though, and has you know, once you know your loosing it, you can spot the tell tale signs so easy... i guess i probably started loosing it 25, but only somebody in the balding game would of been able to notice.... i certainly didnt.

Foam: yes i do apply the foam on my sides... a can that is meant to last 1 month only lasts me 2 weeks, i apply a blob on my crown, a blob on each temple... as they start to melt i rub the crown blob all over the top and the temple blob into my hairline and sides....

im now looking into the home made follica method that we are pursuing in the "new research" section, we may not get astounding results but im sure we can deffo get some results with our DIY methods< and perhaps regrow in the hairline and temples which of course is the hardest part to treat...

Sorry i didnt answer how long it took to regrow sides... there isnt a definitive answer for this.... its was slowly over the course of the last three months... it was only last week when i took those new pics and noticed just how much... i could tell looking in the mirror because my forehead didnt look so wide across.... i just need to bring my hairline down about 1 inch at the front to where it used to be and keep thickening in the crown.... im not that bothered about the temples because.... hell im 31, NW1 looks daft at my age....

I'll be in Manchester tomorrow afternoon :punk:

Now that I know what your scalp looks like, I'll see if I can spot you in a city of more than 2 million inhabitants

they dont help re-grow hair... but they help in making your hair grow twice as fast as normally... so i would guess the results i have so far would have taken me 6 months without the vits and mins...

Silca could be responsible for some thickening, its a mineral that boosts the hair shaft thickness....

But there is no doubt in my mind that the minoxidil and finasteride are the winners here..... and nizoral also... its is reported that it has a mild effect at inhibiting DHT in the scalp... So i used it every other night and let it soak in for a good half hour before washing it out...

I've been using Silica for some time too. To be honest, the bottle says that it helps nail and hair growth. I can't say neither my nails nor my hair has improved much. The only improvement I can see is in the areas where I apply minoxidil.

My view of supplements is that we don't really need them. The key is to have a balanced diet. A balanced diet should provide most of the RDAs. With supplements we go over the RDA for many vitamins and minerals. The excess vitamin and minerals are either not absorbed or stored somewhere in the body. If they aren't absorbed, the supplement is useless. If they get stored in our body, this might lead to more problems in the future.

I'm saying we don't need them, but do actually use supplements regularly. I try to pay attention to what I eat, and if I have a bad day I take supplements.

ive always had a pretty balanced diet.... but my hair and nails have never grown as fast as they do right now... and that is due to msm & VIT C

and no doubt some of that dosage is excess and gets washed away in my system but its deffo makes your hair grow twice as fast and when your treating it it with the big three it helps speed up results...

MSM is superb!!!

Chancer, I hope you don't feel offended, we are just having a conversation on nutrition, etc....

What I noticed in your previous posts is that you used to have number 2 once every 3 to 4 days. I'm sorry to say this, but that tells me that your diet was very unhealthy. You might have thought of it as healthy but it wasn't. Maybe your body was in need of some extra boost.

I'm not sure if you saw the Channel 4 programme on sandwiches the other day, I was really surprised with some of the results. 90% of the sandwiches sold in a well-known sandwich chain exceeded government's recommended saturated fat and salt levels. The worst offender was my favourite, the meatball marinara.

The point I'm trying to make is that sometimes we eat something thinking we have a balanced diet, but we don't.

chancer, any chance you could post a front shot to compare with your initial one? I'd really like to see what kind of a difference the side growth makes....

yea, I'm excited about the prospect of regrowing temple points. It would surely make my forehead appear to be not as wide.....has anyone else grown their temple points back?

Looks like people, who take some strange vitamins with the big three, mostly get great results.

not offended in the slightest.... i always knew it was odd not to need to go everyday... but my diet honestly wasn’t bad, its always been balanced, never drink soda drinks and very, very rarely do i have a sandwich from the Asda for lunch... i have to be having a terribly bust day to do that... i make my own sandwiches with... chicken, tuna, wholemeal bread, fruit & veg every day.... it honestly is and was balanced..... and only drink alcohol (moderately) and have a Indian or a fry up on a weekend…i just didnt need to go all that much... now its as regular as clockwork... And i had never taken any vits or minerals ever before this... not even as a kid...

Chancer,
I notice you use Rogaine foam. I am currently using the generic liquid for about 3 months and its severly irritating my scalp and leaving me with tons of residue on my scalp. Does the foam do this to you?

Any help from anyone else would be greatly appreciated too.

Hi Rob... No irritation at all, plus it smells great Its just like using hair moose instead of gel i guess...
