Can I hold my breath?

It seems like there's multiple things down the pipeline that are promising to cure and end male pattern baldness for good, I don't mean to sound pompous, but I have a full head of hair except its going and its going quick, every year the front creeps up and diffuses a little more. So, what do you guys think, are we gonna see something solid within the next few years or what? Reading this section of the forums makes the cure seem so close I can almost taste it, yet nothing seems to be actually happening. WHEN WILL THE WAIT BE OVER IM DYING WITH EXCITEMENT! But not a good kind of excitement, the kind where your waiting for someone to donate a kidney or else you die...

PS: I know this isn't a break through post but I'm sure other people on the forums feel the same way, I just had to vent. And you know what grinds my gears, really pessimistic people that just shoot down every new exciting thing on here..

The timescale I'm working with is that something will be available by 2014/15. That's not a complete guess, but ultimately nobody really knows.

I'm not sure what your stance is right now, but I wouldn't "hold your breath" and not seek treatment. You should aim to try and maintain what you have for this 5/6 year time period, with a treatment you're happy with and can tolerate. If, by that time, there isn't a treatment after all, at least you'll still have your hair and be in a position to make a decision about where you want to go from there.

I'm known as a pessimist here, but I would say no.
All the "pipeline" stuff is theoretical at this point. While it may do wonders for someone who is 7 years old now, to hope for any sort of regrowth is not necessarily realistic.

Clay, I like how you admit to be (a little) pessimistic, it shows you're on the way to the bright side ;)

But anyways, holding your breathe is something I wouldn't do. There are quite a lot of products at the market just now that will help you maintain the hair that you have. Also it will give you some peace with the process of balding, it's giving you the feeling you are doing "all that's possible". I'm on rogain atm, and even though I have the feeling it's making my hairline look fucked up, I'm quite happy with it, lol.

If it wasn't for the damn trials I think we could see a great working product in less than 3 years, I really do think so. I don't think any of us can imagine how fast science is evolving these years. In some kind of documentary a little time ago I read that more than 80% (can't remember the exact number, maybe it was even above 90%) of all scientists ever lived, live TODAY. Go think of it.

Cure for cancer, AIDS, alopecia androgenetica... It could be just me, but I think that in the next 50 years we'll have a cure for it all.

That would be great if they cured balding in 50 years. I'd be a 77 year old tearing up the nursing home.
The problem with current treatments is that, as someone else said, they are "a punchline". There's no way I'm messing with a drug whose potential side effects include tits, and I'm a smoker. Rogaine seems to be great, if you're willing to apply it twice daily for somewhat crappy results and white flaky sh*t in your hair all day that makes your Rogaine use fairly obvious.

I think we'll see a cure for hairloss quite soon actually, within the next ten years. I really like the stuff that's coming out from Follica the last couple of days.

I have no idea about the progress in finding a cure for cancer and AIDS, but my gut feeling says it will be here in the next 50 years :). Though new diseases will probably find their way too, so maybe we'll have other problems by that time :dunno:

About the rogaine btw, take the foam! I hate taking time in the bathroom and applying this stuff only takes me a minute or so. Nothing to be seen afterwards either, really like the stuff (though I haven't seen any results just yet, but not even 3 months in)

I didn't hear anything. What came out ?
I am actually becoming more skeptical day after day as my shedding goes depressingly bad.
I have been looking through all the past "hopes" that have ended up as failures or scams. I remember all the hype about Intercytex and the excitement for all the other products ( think Neosil,...) and the result ?
I am afraid if Follica doesn't succeed we will have nobody to turn to for at least 5-10 years.
It is depressing.

I wouldn't hold your breath. Just look at some archived posts on the usenet group alt.baldspot from the early 90s. They too thought a cure was just around the corner, but we are still no closer almost 20 years later.

Exactly we've had new treatments but nothing thats totally effective, as far as hair loss is concerned finasteride is by far the best thing ever and its effectivness was discovered by accident, its was'nt made as a hair loss treatment.
HM is a pipe dream its been promising a cure for over 10 yrs, all these so called trials and has anyone ever seen any evidence? Not even 1 single photo.
And for arguements sake if it were to come out after all this time and investment the initial cost would no doubt be astronomical. They'll cater to the richest most desperate guys for years and years until demand eventually starts to drop and only then will they slowly lower the price.
