DHT does not "eat" hair, in fact DHT does absolutely nothing to hair.

Uhh....you're forgetting that androgens directly alter the transcription of growth enhancers/inhibitors within the hair follicle which directly stimulate its growth (in the case of body hair) or suppress its growth (in the case of scalp hair).

What role does the immune response play then?

It appears that BOTH factors play a role in balding: the direct suppressive effects of androgens, and the involvement of the immune system.

Is it known why/how the immune response against the hair follicles take place? Perhaps the DHT in the follicle cells leads to loss of immune privilges?

so stopping the immune system won't cure baldness. It takes both that and stopping DHT.

Lol @ stopping immune system...a great drug to take for male pattern baldness would be cyclosporin

The immune cells dont attack the follicle until later in life so something must trigger them off...probably the DHT that is changing proteins expressed on MHC molecules on the follicle cells...that sounds logical but my guess is that its effing complicated thats why there hasnt been much progress made in male pattern baldness
