Can Androgenetic Alopecia lead to shedding?

I need to understand this. Is hair shedding, like shaking your hair and having it fall unto the sink by the dozens (like 50 hairs) the result of Androgenetic Alopecia or Telogen Effluvium? I have always been under the impression that Androgenetic Alopecia means recession or miniaturization and not shedding. Is this correct? I have seemingly healthy thick strands of hair, even some short new growth ones, fall out when I rub my hair. I have a Serum Iron deficiency (which I am getting treatment for soon) and I'm hoping the shedding is due to this treatable condition rather than Androgenetic Alopecia.
