Before i get into this, please do not judge me on this regimen as i am fully aware of the risks involved. Also if you dont read it all dont bother replying, i will be using this thread to document my progress.

Just a summary of what ive been doing these last 5 months.

Mid - late November I started propecia to maintain my receding temples. I was a strong NW2 with full thickness, only thinning on the sides of my head. I began experiencing the recession at the tender age of 14 but my loss was moving at a snails pace and only eventually regressed to NW2 at 19. I have medium to long hair with bangs so i rarely saw my hairline but with a strong history of baldness on both sides of the family i knew it may happen some day ( my dad has good hair )

December/January - after a couple months on propecia my hairline began to thin aswell as the temples, which seemed to be moving far more aggressively. This was accompanied by moderate itchiness and pain in the places i am receding. Panicked and annoyed i jumped on Nizoral, which did help the itch, but did not and still has not eliminated it.

February - My hairline and temples continued to aggressively recede to the point i had to change my hairstyle. I was losing hope and getting more desperate so i added in S5 cream with dermarolling 0.5 but changed to 1.0.

Early April - Still losing ground faster than i ever imagined, temples are now completely gone and my hairline is real close to NW3. I have to use wax and hair spray just to disguise my recession now which is killing me... a few days later when i noticed i was over 4 months on propecia and only deteriorated rapidly i knew that it was not working for me. I did NOT experience excess hair fall but a dramatic increase in thinning. My hair strands are strong and thick at the tip and thin and transparent at the root now, i almost cant believe it. I knew i needed to take drastic action if i wanted another shot at saving my hair. This is where the desperation has led me.

Present day - I am continuing to take propecia and as of the last 10 days i have been using oral spironolactone 50mg 2x a day and plan on increasing it to 75mg 2x a day by the end of the second week.
Ive come to the understanding that my hair is sensitive to all androgens, including T, otherwise my male pattern baldness would not have sped up ten fold, but simply progressed as normal if I was a non responder. I believe i am simply just a BAD responder.
I plan on staying on propecia (which i will soon change for a generic) and spironolactone indefinitely.. if it helps.
Since starting spironolactone im definitely experiencing side effects which ill list:
Quick shooting pain in testicles ( not often)
Loss of morning wood ( still had it on soley propecia )
Minor pain in breasts ( frequent )
Libido is extremely low but im enjoying that side effect.

I actually started shedding for real i believe. I was shedding thicker hairs instead of the thin wispy ones im used to ( i only began shedding thin hairs upon starting propecia )

Apart from those listed I have experienced POSITIVE side effects since starting:
My sebum decreased by at least half! Prior i would have to wash my hair every day as it looked so bad all greasy, thin and limp. Now i can go an extra day without my hair getting greasy and stays looking good for longer.

The chest hair which started growing on propecia is falling out ( i had no chest hair prior to treatments )

My skin is becoming smoother and softer, hell i actually look healthier than i have for a good while!

The itch that appeared when i started propecia is fading even further, but still present.

I believe the shed i experienced upon starting spironolactone is subsiding so i am hoping for good things to come.

I plan on peaking eventually at 100mg 2x a day but only for a couple of months then lowering back down to 75mg 2x a day.

After 3 - 4 months if i am not satisfied i will be adding oral minoxidil 5mg 2x a day along with kirkland 1x at night.

I will update again in a month or two with hopefully stabilisation at the least. Thanks for the read folks and good luck to you all.

Not to scare you, as finasteride has done wonders for me with little sides. But people on here have complained of finasteride actually increasing DHT (speculation) due to increase in hair loss, itching and body hair growth. Not sure how its possible but you symptoms seems to match. Id say get off it.

Thanks for the reply. Oh no worries im not deterred. Im gonna stick with it alongside spironolactone until/if i experience regrowth. Then i can drop the finasteride and see where that takes me. I personally dont think it hss increased my DHT as the only side on finasteride i experienced apart from accelerated loss and minor chest hair growth was lowered libido and if im not mistaken DHT and T both affect libido. I will need to get a blood test done but i dont have any baseline results to compare it to ( damn. )
Oh i almost forget! My eyebrows have gotten alot thicker while on finasteride, as prior they were fine and thin. Now they are quite bushy :(

I'm also a bad responder to finasteride so it will be interesting to hear how it goes. Good luck!

Are you afraid of getting gyno and how would you handle it if it would occur?

I think a lot of people throw in the towel on finasteride too quick really. If you're not experiencing sides I'd give it a full 2 years. We're talking Years of hairloss and then we get too impulsive thinking "oh well others experience growth at 2-5-6 months and I don't" I thought I was still losing for the first 5-6 months but now it's quite evident majority of my hair isn't getting worst at 7.5 months.

Thank you :) I am not. The only thing i am afraid of is going bald. If i experience gyno ill run a short course of genox or something similar, probably one less harsh on the hair and wait for it to subside, then jump right back on spironolactone at 150mg daily plus oral minoxidil. Regrowth is worth any side effect no matter how nasty in my eyes. I dont care for having children and sex doesnt interest me. I am however a good looking guy and that satisfies me more than any woman could.

Hey Joey, i get the general census is to normally give it at least a year for a fair judgement, however what ive described is NOT normal. Before finasteride my temple sides were still mostly present but thinning, now they are completely gone and my hairline has creeped up half an inch. It is noticeable to me and to others ive confided in. Finasteride can and does hurt some people, i think i unfortunately fall into that category. What rotten luck eh?
Nonetheless im gonna do everything i can so even if i dont succeed at least i can say i tried absolutely everything i could to stop my hair loss, then buy a wig and try keep it a secret for the rest of my miserable life. Sigh.

Where did you get the spironolactone from? What brand is it? Thanks

Hello Sheepish i get my spironolactone from the dark net as alldaychemist and inhouse pharmacy cant seem to set up a working check out page for UK users... or maybe its just because i was using a tablet?

But to answer your question I get it from Dream Market. The spironolactone is generic and from mondial pharmacies :) I would strongly suggest you try other treatments first if you have not already. I am desperate to keep my hair so that is why i am resorting to such a regimen.

Hey everyone just a quick update. Im still shedding like a dog but incredibly i have not lost any ground at the front since ive started treatment! Before i added oral spironolactone and finasteride alone i was only shedding at the front and took quite a big hit about 5 months in. Now despite shedding thick healthy looking hairs i do not seem to be losing ground, and believe me with th3 amount of shedding ive been experiencing i would of thought i would be obviously balding, but this has not happened. I should also add ive dropped my dosage down to 100mg as its easier to take one full pill split into two over the course of the day rather than try to cut up additional pills even smaller. Im still experiencing moderate ball ache and sometimes achieving an errection is difficult and not usually 'solid'. This isnt a concern to me as hair is more important. This may just be in my head but i may be getting very slight regrowth.. there is one lone hair starting to grow where hair hasn't grown in about 2 years!

I should also add ive finished my supply of propecia and i am now on generic finasteride ( finpecia ) and have not noticed any difference :)

Thats my update and ill check back later today for replies, and my next update will be next month hopefully with obvious regrowth!!
Good luck everyone :)

I always like to see people's hair grow back as they transition. Take good pics, please.

Sorry to hear your bad luck with finasteride. If it was just increased diffuse I'd say its a regrowth shed but having the hairline but up that much so fast isn't good. You may be test sensitive. Would say consider RU but you're already on oral spironolactone so probably wouldn't help much. Did you get any baseline bloodwork?
