Boulder25Male's Story - (2 year update on page 5)

Hi so I've been putting off the hairloss issue for a long time. My father did not start losing his hair until he was in his late 30's and has a different pattern than mine so I figure it is from my mothers side and mine does resemble my uncles however, my grandfather is in his 80's and still has a solid head of hair and my grandmothers side didn't have any issues either so I'm not sure how this whole gene got passed down. I started shedding at 18 and now I can really see it.

My pattern looks like a Norwood 6 or 5a but definitely not as thin as the scales, but that is my pattern.

On 7/1/2010 I started taking Finesteride 5mg and cutting it into 4 and taking 4 pieces every 5 days. So far 0 side effects and if anything an increased sex drive. But I have noticed an increase in shedding not sure if this is normal.

Previously I had tried Nioxin, Nizoral and Follicleanse and likely a ton of other products that I cannot recall right now. So my regime right now will be Finesteride and for shampoo I will do Nizoral, Follicleanse and Emu Oil Shampoo as a rotation. I want to put off Rogaine Foam until the 6 month or 1 year period to see if it actually works.

For the mean time to cover up my balding areas I am using Toppik and Haircubed (i like this better) but these get messy if I sweat or get my hair wet.

Below I have attached 2 sets of pictures without any product in my hair. One is under the bathroom light (6 days into taking Finesteride) and the other is in natural light (Day 1 of Finesteride)....and there is one reference picture of me 2 years into when my hairloss initially started. It looks like I have shed a lot but it is just because of the lighting. I have shed but not as much as it looks.

Any advice comments or suggestions would be very appreciated. This has really stressed me out.

EDIT: Also forgot to mention my hair in the thinning areas is very very oily at the end of the day and the scalp underneath is becoming shiny. I have had seborrheic dermatitis in the past and dandruff many times so I'm not sure if this plays into the hairloss. As soon as the hair gets oily it sheds a lot faster and a lot more sometimes falling out with white bulbs at the end of the hair. I hear a build up of oil can clog the follicle is this true? Does this contribute to the hairloss? When I shower and when I brush my hair i see about 5 strands of hair with every stroke of the brush or rub of the hair with my hand.

Re: Boulder25Male's Story - (25 /started treatment /need advice)

Anyone have any comments? Does finesteride work on the hairline?

I'm really getting nervous about my hairloss the last 2 months thats why I started Finesteride and I am really considering not waiting the 6 months to see results and trying Rogaine to see if I can maintain or regrow my hairline...

maybe you should ask: does finasteride work? I am in the 4th month...and the situation is much worse than at the begenning...for hairline I bet that this will never gonna work...

From what i've seen of people's stories on these boards, finasteride alone either maintains what you have (and hence slows or even stops your hair loss for the time being) or in some cases, along with stopping, gives your hair the opportunity for regrowth.

Many will tell you not to wait 6 months to see results for finasteride, rather 12 months or so since it does seem to take a while to show its effect (if any). I'm on my 5th month of finasteride (started 1mg, then went to 0.5mg over 2months in) and i can't see any changes. I have moments where i feel 'desperate' or nervous as you said and want to try minoxidil however i think it's best to leave that until the 12 month mark. While many guys do get great regrowth with it, some also experience annoying side effects, whilst with others it seems to leave them in a worse condition than when they started. Your hair loss looks kinda similar to mine btw.

So seeing no change, do you think it has at least maintained what you started with? I'll try to give it 6 months before I think about Rogaine although it might be tough and if at 6 months I see that there is an improvement or no change I will wait another 6. If there is a worsening, I will jump on Rogaine I guess.

I also bought nettle root, saw palmetto, vitamin B w/ folic and biotin. Maybe those will aid in the recovery.

I got desperate and jumped on the Big 3 right away... i've seen great results, but unfortunately I don't know if it's the finasteride that's doing all the work, or the Rogaine, or both since I started them at around the same time.

What is "great results"? What was the level of improvement? Was yours comparable to mine and did yours fill in? How long had you been losing your hair before starting and how long did it take to see improvement? Did you experience any initial shedding?

And what is the 3rd of the Big 3? Rogaine, finasteride and what else?

Sorry for all the questions hopefully you can answer some.

Okay yes, I use Nizoral 2x a week and started finasteride a week or so ago. I'm still not sure whether to wait 6-12 months to start Rogaine or to do it now. I can hide the thinning areas with Haircubed but I don't want to let it get worse and risk it becoming even thinner and not being able to grow any back.

Your hairloss is not so bad yet, so if you wait the months and get good results you may get away with not having to apply a topical every day

Very true it's just that over the past 2 months I've seen a sharp increase in the hairloss which is what made me start this new regime. I hope this accelerated pace slows.

Well i'd like to think it is maintaining what i have. One good sign i guess, is that i'm not shedding as i use to (before starting finasteride), just small amounts. Although whether it's having a significant effect on my hair, i should know around the 12 month mark.

You can see my before/after pics here: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=58491

I'd say it's pretty comparable to yours thinning wise, but my hairline was still in tact. I had been noticing thinning since I was around age 20, but it didn't really bother me up until last August... got depressed, attempted suicide, lost my job, did sh1tty in school. I literally did nothing from August till Feb (Football was the only thing I looked forward to). Then in Feb, I saw a doctor for a thyroid test, he said nothing was wrong. So I went out and bought Rogaine and Nizoral. The friendly people on here recommended I take finasteride right away. Took their advice, and my hair is doing pretty good ever since.

And yes, I experienced some pretty bad shedding from Rogaine the first couple weeks.. but I was already at rock bottom at that point anyway so I was just like "F*** it". But from what I've read, apparently an initial shed is a good thing because that means you're a good responder.

I hope I answered all your questions. Good luck bro, I truly hope you get your hair back.

Re: Boulder25Male's Story - (25) - 19 days in update on page 2

So I know 19 days in is nothing but I got a haircut so I figured I'd update.

I take finasteride in 1/4 pieces 4 times every 5 days...sooo 1.25mg for 4 days and 1 day off.....I also do Nizoral 2x a week and I'm holding off on rogaine. I use biotin, vitamin b and nettle root.

I have noticed shedding when I comb or shower....shower is down to 4-5 hairs and comb is about the same and its about the same if I rub my head/hair.

At 6 months I'll decide whether or not to do rogaine.

My biggest worry is my hairline as its getting pretty thin and noticeable....don't really care about the top of the head since I can use Haircubed, but I can't really hide the hairline.

Also the hair is very oily in the morning and by the end of the day and the shiny scalp is starting to shine through a little with shorter hair.
