Best Treatment for Norwood 2? -Photo-

Ok, so I'm 31 and my hairline is begining to recede. Well, actually, it's been going for a while. But, I just woke up one day, and said to myself, "Hey, didn't my hairline used to be lower?"
And then promptly forgot about it. Now, it's a couple of years later and I'm noticing it going away again.

I realize that it's not bad yet, but it is definitely begining to go. I want to stop it before it goes too far, and idealy even bring it back. (The photos are about a year old, but fairly close)

I just read the Stopping Your Hairloss Guide, I seem to be a 2 on the Norwood Scale. I'm not sure but, it looks like I should go after a DHT Inhibitor like Propecia or maybe Avodart.

Does this sound right?

Also, is there any reason I shouldn't get the generic versions of either? I mean, it's the same stuff right?

I'd get Proscar. It works the same as Propecia, but the pills are cheaper as you split each pill into 5 equal parts. I am also 30 and been on Proscar and Nizoral shampoo for 4 months and im regrowing hair in the crown area and temples and my hair has gotten thicker and darker. Im very happy that I decided to get on finasteride.

Ignore that comment.

Welcome to the forums Desprez ....

Its difficult growing hair on a slick area of the scalp. You don't seem to have any thinning in the hair-bearing areas. You also look good with your hair like that already.

If you really want to tackle this, you're looking at Propecia 1mg daily along with Minoxidil 5% twice daily and Nizoral shampoo once every 3 days .... heavily focused on the recession area and in front of it where you used to have hair.

At most I would expect to restore a half inch to an inch or so after 1 or 2 years of doing this. These treatments work very slowly and work best on areas of the scalp that still have some hair on them, even if it is extremely thin.

Hmmm. That sounds like a lot.

I can accept it the way it is, I suppose. In most situations it's not too bad. I included the blue pic because it was probably the most unflattering lighting and angle, to show it at its worst.
What if I just want to prevent further loss?

Also, although my hair is not colored at the moment, I may go back to color in the future. How does Nizoral shampoo deal with color? That is, when your hair is colored bright colors, you need to use a color-safe shampoo or the color will fade quickly.

Oh, and managuense, you should have seen it when I had big spikes.
Actually, because you like my hair style sooo much, I'll include a pic just for you.

Well the spikes took some time, but I haven't done that in a couple years. My hair is cut maybe a little shorter than the red pic now. Only takes 5 min, so no, not very hard at all.

u seem fine to me, I'd say not even nw2. just take rogaine 2% once a day and you will be fine. forget finasteride! its not worth it

thylax,

why are you trashing finasteride? you are using it. How do you know that your results are not due to finasteride too? keep in mind: minoxidil does not really stop the process.

Dude - if maintaining your hair is the most realistic goal, then finasteride is the go for you.

I actually think your hair looks pretty damn good - certainly a little recession looks better than the 'Friar Tuck' male pattern baldness that seems to be trying to attack me! It's been over 2.5 years for me without losing much ground at all and i'm what would be an "average" responder at best.

If you are one of the 98% that don't experience sides, can keep your dosage consistent as well as a positive outlook, you'll be fine.

All the best in your fight.

I agree with Def. If you want to just keep the hair you have then only use propecia. You can always add nizoral because it is so cheap and effortless to use with a regimen. Thats up to you if you think your temples are gong to keep receding from where they are. If I was you, thats what I would do, your hair seems to be in solid shape.
