Anyone Been To A Trichologist For Hair Loss?

I have taken my 16 year old daughter to a dermatologist and an internal medicine doctor. Neither seemed at all concerned with her hair loss or that fact that her Ferritin level was 5. Being 16 and dealing with hair loss is devastating for her. We are on iron now but I was wondering if we should see a Trichologist. I am located in Alabama and I have done some research on locating one but can't seem to find one anywhere close to us. Any help would be appreciated.

I’m 15, so I definitely understand! It’s made me really depressed, but I believe it’s temporary because I had a major stressor occur four months ago. I’m going to be seeing the Trichologist in two days. Fingers crossed that my self diagnosis is correct, not a single person in my family is bald. Sorry to hear that btw, I live in Canada, Hamilton so the wait times are horrible. Do you mind looking at my pics? I really want reassurance from someone. My parting doesn’t see wider but I keep feeling it is no matter how many pics I observe, wether it’d be a month from now or two months from now. Also do not mind the dandruff, I’m getting it washed today.

I hate you are going through this also. Your hair looks thick to me though. My daughter's is a lot thinner and she has thick hair. I really think you are going to be fine!! Will you let me know what the doctor says. Good luck!

Thank you so much! That really cheered me up and I’ll definetly let you know!! I recommend seeing a Trichologist because they are experts in that field but you should be cautious of who to trust as not all specialist get the right training. Make sure they are highly praised and find out where they studied. My Trichologist works at a private clinic and got some of the best training in Canada so I have high expectations from them. Furthermore, having a women as your expert is crucial since my male PCP dismissed it off as hormones and gave me the “it’s just hair” talk. So insensitive! Just because I’m a girl doesn’t mean I don’t run the risk of being bald

Unfortunately your story is very common. Hair loss is just not a concern for most doctors.

A former poster here, @hairblues, had a thread in the women's section. She got a lot of regrowth from treatments including minoxidil (rogaine) and iron supplementation. There was something wrong with her iron, either she didn't store it or didn't keep it. I don't remember exactly but the point is that those does happen and it does have an effect on hair.

A low ferritin level is bad independent of hair. They should be concerned. Is your daughter a vegan?

It's also possible that your daughter has hormonal issues. I don't mean to alarm you. Bear in mind I can't give an accurate guess as a stranger over the internet. But a thyroid problem could damage her hair, as would PCOS or am androgen-secreting tumour.

Thank you for your reply. I am going to read the member you mentioned. We had her thyroid checked but I will ask about the others. Thanks!

Update for Susan: honestly speaking, Trichologists are a great option! Mind you that my hair loss was, in fact, just normal acute stress and not something deeper. All I had to do was get a trim to realize it was growing back as the hair was not weighed down anymore and felt so thick and so full again. A plus to this was that I suit the short style so much better than the long, making me thank the hair loss I guess lol. I don’t want to get your hopes up as my Trichologist was so wonderful I don’t know how to compare. They are so compassionate and caring that I was given free products and a discounted magnification session. How great is that! You need to find a clinic like that. One’s that truly care about your well being over the money. The clinic I went to was called Stimugro btw. It is run by a Chadian-Canadain company. One more thing is that my iron levels are painfully low which would explain the slow hair growth. I’m at risk of being anemic and have to up my pill diasage :(( so iron is DEFINETLY a big factor in hair.

first line of defence is a dermatologist. Trichologists are a waste of money. They can’t give you a scalp biopsy.
