With all due respect to most on HairLossTalk.com, it is somewhat hard for me to understand how somebody can notice male pattern baldness over several years and really be that concerned. A year ago, I knew I had a tendency to receed at the temples, but I never gave it a second thought until about 4 months ago when I noticed a lot of diffuse shedding. In those 4 months I have lost over half the hair on my head and my temples, especially the right one, have receeded so rapidly that I can notice a difference from week to week. By the end of the year, if something doesn't change, I'll be slick bald, or at least having to shave my head because I have just a few little hairs left. I started Propecia just under 60 days ago and I see no positive effects what so ever, although no side effects either. I am still going to give it time to work, but I would say I am probably a non-responder to finasteride.

It pisses me off to hear the "experts" talk about how the process of hairloss is something that takes place gradually with minituarization of follicles. That may be how it happens more often than not, but to say that is the process of male pattern baldness is total bullshit, I am living proof.

Is there anybody out there who has experienced anything similar to this? If so, what happened and how long did it take? Did you respond to finasteride? Etc,etc.

It seems you have aggressive male pattern baldness. I would keep with Propecia as it does not work right away. Give it three to six months to see if it is slowing things down. Then a year to two years to see if it can improve your hair.

But from what you say it sounds like agressive male pattern baldness to me. How old are you?

I am 34. Have you ever heard of somebody with aggessive male pattern baldness to benefit from finasteride or are they usually non responders?

No-one can answer that for you im afraid as everyone has a different genetic make up. I dont think finasteride will stop those bastad temples receding though, sounds like there in a hurry to get to the back of your head my man. Is your dad bald? Are you on any medication or anything else. Good luck sounds like you got a full on battle with your barnet.

The jury is stil out on finasteride effects on the hairline. I believe that can improve hairlines.

To all, I have not had a single bald member of my family at least as far back as my great grandparents, except my brother who lost it all in his early 20's.

Also, I take a medication called Tegretol for a minor seizure disorder. Anybody know if this has ever been linked to male pattern baldness, my Derm says no, but what the hell does he know.

One thing I should add---my Derm thinks I have Telogen Effluvium because shortly before the shedding occurred I suffered an event that brought about debilitating stress. I mean the type of stress that destroys lives-not everyday stress. It went on for months and still lingers now. I thought for a while he was right, but my hair does not seem to be coming back. Possibly the shedding has slowed, I am not sure, but I know that my temples are still receeding like crazy.

Any thoughts?

I am in the same boat as you. I am 35 years old and (thankfully) have had a full head of hair until about a year ago. Since then I have lost half of what I had in front and on top! Crazy!

Do you think you are on your way to being totally bald? I hear that there are periods of acceleration and decceleration. Maybe yours will stop or slow, but if it doesn't slow, how long will it be before you are considered bald? Do you take finasteride or minoxidil and has any of it helped? The only thing I have done is to get on finasteride about 55 days ago. So far, no noticeable change.

The act that your brother has it means u may have the same pattern as his..or somewhere close....In your case i see 3 possibilities

1) Telogen Effluvium, at times this condition may exhibit male pattern baldness like patterns and its known to be sudden and rapid

2)classic male pattern baldness since u stated yr bro had the same condition and lost all his hair

3)Co- Incidence = male pattern baldness and the stressful even occured close to one another giving rise to misinterpretation which is why your DERM diagnosed it as Telogen Effluvium.. but it can also be the classic male pattern baldness ...

You must deal with this, of course. I hope things are getting better, but I really think a lot of hairloss is simply due to excessive stress: a life out of balance, which also includes nutrition and rest.

Not *totally* - I have thick sides and back still, and you can hardly tell I am receding/thinning because my hair is still pretty thick and I can style it so peopel don't notice. My wife wants me to cut my hair super short, but that will reveal to everyone my receding hairline that nobody knew I had. :(
I'm stuck!

rapid, just like you i lost about 40% of my scalp on top in a diffuse pattern in a period i believe of 2 to 3 month. i was also diagnose with Telogen Effluvium, but since my hair loss was most concentrated on top i asked my derm for propecia just in case. i been on it for 2 month and my hair loss has stopped but i'm not sure if it's propecia or my Telogen Effluvium that stopped. my faith is since my hair loss was recent. i wish to recover what i've lost from propecia if my Telogen Effluvium accelarated to male pattern baldness, or if i recover from Telogen Effluvium if it was the main caused. if in 1 year from now things get worst or or don't recpver enough hair to cover my hair loss im just going to go for a fue hair transplant with a good reputation doctor, like armani or H&W. i personally don't believe propecia is worth taking or better than a hair transplant if the hair loss is aggressive to the point that baldness is still noticed.

if your brother went bald in his 20's i hate to say it but you might have male pattern baldness.
especially if it's concetrated on top. your only on propecia for 2 month is still too early to tell if it's work. do what i'm going to do. at least give it 1 year.
