So, I will finally get the move and get a prescription for finasteride, I'm 18, still a NW1 but the shedding is becoming more intense and my sides are thinner. So i'm looking into it for preventional measures if you will. My dad was the same when he was my age but sudenly after his 25th birthday he quickly lost all of his hair.
1-Any stories from people in this forum that have started propecia early?
2-Looking around the interwebz, I've seen tons of young people who have shared their pics and others saying that, not only it is too early for them to be in finasteride, older people usually respond better to the medication, is this even true?
I'm considering, if there Is indeed probabilities of massive sheds on younger people, to just hop on dutasteride lol, it's even cheaper than finasteride here in my country.

Mmm well, finasteride alters hormones... well, specifically dihydrotestosterone and dht is required while the body is developing. So, I guess 18 would be too young if your body is still developing but a dermatologist told me male pattern baldness starts when you finish puberty. So, if you have male pattern baldness that would mean your body has finished developing and altering dht shouldn't be an issue.

Not sure about older people having more success. It's better to get on treatment as early into baldness as you can.

User zzzzz might be someone to talk about using dutasteride. I think he's around my age (21) or younger and he's had pretty good success. The thing to keep in mind is that dutasteride is not FDA approved, it has higher chance of side effects ect. I also considered taking dutasteride initially, however, many senior members informed me i was way too young to mess with dutasteride and that it has chances to give you cancer. Like i said, maybe speak to zzzzz about it. But I don't know that a Doctor will prescribe dutasteride to you if you haven't at least tried finasteride first.

Strike me as one of those kids who reads an article, and suddenly becomes an extremist, and know it all towards a given topic. It's like reading one statement on finasteride that's negative, and that's set in stone for how bad this drug must be. A very small percentage of people who are succesfull will post results, and postitive feedback on a drug protocol they're taking. Why, because they are moving on with their life. If I purchase a good steak, I eat it and move on with my life. Tip the waitress, and give her my regards. if it's bad I give a medicore tip, and vent online about my frustration.

Take what you read with a grain of salt. Out of the millions who are successfull, almost none will post about it. But those who recieve negative effects are more likely to roast on about it, and in return scar monger those against it.

Finasteride is such a mild drug it's not even funny. I usually skip these annoying posts, but I'm in an alright mood to give my final food for thought. I took the drug for the first time between the ages of 18-19, and the only side effect I had was maintaining my hair. All I'm saying is on a hair loss forum is that almost everyone here is on finasteride, and only a small handfull actually experienced side effects. it's the main weapon in the arsenal :finger2:

Well, thank you guys for the two replies.

ssjpotato, cheers for that, I've read zzzzz posts and he was indeed successful, really good gains and aparently zero sides, wish him all the best.
Well yeah, I guess that's a good point, I think I'm finally recceeding and the sooner I prevent it, the best.

shookwun, well, i've been googling all week on this and I can assure you I'm nothing like that. Thanks for sharing your story and I will actually take your word for that! You do make a good point. If I went to an acne forum seeking help, they suggested a regimen that worked for me I guess I wouldn't return to it lol. As well as the steak lol

Well, thanks guys! I'm seriously considering the Avodart, I mean, it's even cheaper here, and seems more effective, but you do make valid points on finasteride, and i'm not really that worried about the sides, I have consumed worse medications. If anything, I'm worried I won't respond well to it and shed a lot without gains.

starting with dutasteride first is pretty unnecessary for almost all cases

younger people respond to treatment better than older people, but im talking like 50 v. 20, not 21 v 18

18 is fine for starting finasteride

personally I don't believe that every Norwood 1 18-year-old should simply jump on Finasteride as some kind of insurance policy should they go bald in the future. It shouldn't be thought of like a vaccination. I realise that catching it early is key, but finasteride should only really be used if you're pretty sure you have male pattern baldness.

finasteride's pretty safe but it's still a drug, and should only be used if necessary and after careful consideration - it's not like popping an aspirin. Even moreso with dutasteride

I agree. At this point I would just document with pics and make sure your hair loss is progressing before considering finasteride, especially at 18.
