Since T/GEL coal-tar shampoo was used in the Propecia FDA studies, I'm wondering what would be better or worse to use as the anti-inflammatory part of my regimen along with using Propecia as my DHT inhibitor. I know Nizoral has anti-androgen effects too, but I do have mild dandruff/flaky/scaly scalp and feel that Nizoral might not help as much because coal-tar is not only antifungal as well but also loosens flakes/dead skin and prevents the excessive shedding of skin. I would rotate between the two but I found this:
http://www.pharmacymix.com/nizoral_shampoo.htm which states towards the bottom:

Precautions With Nizoral
Nizoral shampoo is not designed to be used with other medicated shampoos or creams. Combining multiple medicated treatments may increase scalp irritation potentially cause interactions between the different medications. Check with your physician or pharmacist if you wish to combine two or more medications at one time.

There's no evidence for or against coal tar. It might be spectacularly useful.

I'd avoid the coal tar version of T-Gel because of this: https://www.hairlosstalk.com/interact/threads/beware-of-the-monstrous-benzoic-acid.96905/

Get the T-Gel for greasy hair that has Piroctone Olamine instead. I found it to be much better that the coal tar one and it does not have benzoic acid in it.

I don't see benzoic acid in the ingredients listed on Neutrogena's website:
