I've read that people who think they are losing ground after a long time on finasteride switch to dutasteride. But would increasing finasteride dose help instead?

Yes, but you can maintain depends what your doing wrong whilst taking Finasteride.

If you are already taking the 1mg then most likely not

Dr. Bernstein recommends this. He says he often recommends his patients who've been on finasteride for awhile and are starting to thin again to go from 1.25 to 2.5 mg a day.
