Worried About My Hairline Thinning?

So recently I decided to buzz my hair off since Ive suffered from bad dandruff for years (since early highschool) nothing really worked and I finish decided to buy nizoral since it seems to work well. So cutting off my hair I noticed that I have a spot of hair near my left hairline that has thinning hair...

I thought I'm going bald, but at the same time it doesn't make sense. nobody in my family suffered baldness, my father is 57 and is a Norwood 1. My grandfather is 90 and Is a Norwood 2.

In fact this was my hair roughly 6-8 months ago... Very curly and thick. Now I've seen this spot of hair and it's making be nervous. The weird part is it's only on one side of my head, the right side is fine. Ever since I've noticed it I started to take biotin, eat a crap ton of nuts and change up my diet completely. Even started to run essential oils into the one spot to see if anything will change.

Also in certain light it looks fine and in certain lights it looks thinner.

Edit: forgot to add right side of head photo

if I recall correctly mild hair loss is one of the side effects of Nizoral but again it's rare.

It's killing me to see it, feels like it suddenly appeared out of nowhere.

Guessing I should get on the finasteride train now?

Welcome to the club, I would say try finasteride for a month if you can stomach it (hopefully). Then take it from there.

if i were you id go to a skilled dermatist and ask him to look at your hairfolicles with a microscope for miniturisation before you start any medication...

i could be wrong but it looks like you in the very early beginning of a diffuse thinning

Can they also determine if I'm 100% balding? Because I don't feel like my hair is thinning at the top. I just have really curly thick hair.

Then again... Who knows anymore, I'm in denial at the moment thinking eating more fish and avacados will help... That and clinging onto my father's sides genetics

yes a skilled dermatologist can see with a microscope if you have miniturisated hairfolicles

If you can, try and go to one that specializes in hairloss. Not all dermatologists are the same; I've anecdotally heard stories of people going in with doctors saying things like: "use minoxidil, it will lower DHT". In the end though you know your hair best, monitor your situation and if you notice deterioration, jump on finasteride now.

Personal story, I was going through very early stages of thinning when I was 19 and jumped on finasteride. I haven't lost any hair over the past 9 years; no one would even guess that I take finasteride. If you start it early enough finasteride can be powerful in preventing the balding process... but once damage is already there, its much more difficult to reverse that

So in regards to finasteride working “forever”, true, I don’t think a 70 year old is going to be able to keep a 20-30 year old thickness in hair level regardless of what he does.

The Rossi et al. Study had some pretty promising results. Roughly 90 percent of people who start, after TEN years, we’re still above baseline. That’s pretty significant.

Anecdotally for me, I suppose after 9 years my hair isn’t as thick as it was when I was a teenager, but people actually complement my hair and say it looks really good for my age, and I don’t think that would be the case without starting finasteride.

The hair doesn't seem to be too far gone, if it take finasteride will I see some regrowth? Also could I take minoxidil to regrow and then when I'm satisfied just stop using it and maintain with finasteride?

let a Doctor check for miniturisation first

How is the hairloss like on your mothers side? It can come from either side.

There is definately some diffuse thinning there. Before you got the buzzcut were you shedding a lot of hairs in showers etc? I would start using minoxidil right now and if you see it get worse then over time you can add low dose finasteride maybe 0.5mg every other day.
when hair is grown out it can be very easy to hide diffuse thinning. Below is an example of my hair after a buzzcut and a few months later when grown out. Also, I have seen cases where people diffuse thin and it takes decades for it to get bad so not all hope is lost. Theres also cases where people diffuse to a nw6-nw7 in a matter of 2-3 years. Considering your dads genetics you could possibly be the former.

Hmmm I've always had very oily hair too. I just always hated eashing my hair because it would dry out my hair so much, especially with thick curly hair...
