Well, they told her they didn't want her to shave her head before she did. I think it's fair and square.

Reminds me of a story...

I had a female friend that had thin hair, she wanted to shave it off so that it could grow stronger. I'm talking about the misconception that shaved hair grows stronger.

I offered my services, and shaved her head with proper razors and everything... I haven't seen her in 8-9 years as she is in a different country, so I don't know if her hair is any thicker now.

Regarding the woman in the news, she's in a image oriented business, she should not have done it. I personally do not mind being served by someone that has a tattoo or shaved head, etc, but I know "serious businesses" don't like it. I think she was trying to prove a point to her boss, and she went too far...

It doesn't look bad. A black woman can get away with keeping her hair that short, why shouldn't she?

I'm not sure why women with shaved heads are views so negatively. I think certain women pull it off really well. Natalie Portman comes to mind...She was sexy with her shaved head.

If a girl wants to shave her head, she shouldn't be fired for doing so.

Who cares? She loses a job and it will grow back. Big deal! Some guys with male pattern baldness can't even live their lives properly because of how hairloss effects them. Let alone get sacked from a little crappy waitressing job.

Just play the victim like always. It's wrong that she got fired from her job just because he buzzed his hair for a good cause. Period.

You're implying that it's no biggie to lose your job like that and justify it by telling how bad it is to lose your hair. I can't see how these 2 things connect.

It is illegal (in America anyway) for any employer to discriminate based on race, gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs and certain physical/mental disabilities, NOT the way someone looks. Looksism is the last frontier left for people to exercise their compulsion to discriminate.

Yeah and with all due respect U.M we all know that is a big bunch of crap. Employers do it everyday and get away with it. Come back down to planet earth, because you're off with the fairies in your perfectly idealistic little world :shakehead:

I don't think he was saying things actually work this way, simply that they are supposed to. I agree that is the way it should work, because it is wrong to judge people on their appearance. This particular case is slightly different though, because this was a self inflicted change. Still though, she should not have been fired.

Don't act as if simply because it was only a mere waitressing job that it's meaningless. In part it's the principle. We also have no idea what this womans particular situation was. Maybe this was the only job she could get. Maybe she needed it, mayhap she was barely getting by. Lot's of maybes but the point is we don't know, so you shouldn't act as if it doesn't matter. Just because you don't view waitressing as a worthwhile form of employment.

Yeah, I know its not an ideal world, duh. Racism still exists, just subtler and more integrated. I'm not naive enough to expect that everyone just love and respect eachother as who they are and not hate someone simply because of the way they look. The world would be a better place if did though. But I will never condone the notion that someone is less of a person because they are in a wheelchair or any other multidude of reasons that we can find to label someone "inferior". Eureka is right, its the principal of it. Back in the fifties when black students were venturing onto previously all white college campuses for the first time,it was perfectly alright to yell "Ni66er" at them as they pass in the halls. Nowadays, it is perfectly alright for someone to yell baldy at me in the same situation. I keep thinking back to what Dudemon said in his last topic about the whole class publicly taunting him during his presentation, even the teacher. If they were harassing Dudemon because he was in a wheelchair or because he had a thick middle eastern accent, then this would be considered an outrage and a PR nightmare.
