I have been experiencing hair Male Pattern Baldness - thinning in the back and on the temples (front). I have not been taking any medicine to have caused this and yet I cannot find the reason for it. Aside from stress, what other reasons could be causing this hairloss?

Is there anything I can do to help my situation?

My husband's doctor told him that I should not go on Spiroctalone for some reason - as a women, are there alot of side effects or ill-effects of this drug?

My hair is also very very very and course even though I only wash it once a week. I have had thyroid test and then came out fine, so I don't think that is the culprit.

I use Head and Shoulders for my dry scalp, is this what I should be using?

My self-esteem is quite low because of this and my hair was used to be really nice and now I spend hours trying to cover and fix it.

more stuff I forgot

I forgot to include that I also have little bits of facial hair on my chin. Also about 30 years ago I had to take male hormone pills because I had two holes in the retina of my eye. I took the pills for about 4-6 months. Does you think after all these years that those hormone pill would make a difference?

I also wash my hair once a week because I would have to fix my hair everyday from scratch (it takes my about 3 + hours as it is to fix it after the hairdressers).

I don't want to wear a wig, so I would prefer any solutions that do not deal with that. Thanks again.

Could be an adrenal issue or even thyroid (TSH isn't as conclusive as some think). Possibly iron deficiency.

I've read cases of women having male pattern baldness-like balding (namely at temples) at the thyroid.about.com forums which resolved after stabliziing their condition. Some seem to think Evening Primrose Oil supplements help.

Or it could be all hormonal.

Either way I would see a doctor about iron/adrenal/thyroid issues first (check http://www.thyroid-info.com/topdrs/canada.htm ) and then a hair specialist. I wouldn't see a plain dermatolgist if I were you, they are usually useless when it comes to hair (I found this out the hard way).
