Will I head to NW6 or 7 eventually?

I'm 22 and been on propecia for 3 months. I noticed about 7 months ago that my front was thinning (I'm on a NW2 right now). Since I began losing hair so early would I head to NW6 or 7 in the future if I wouldn't take propecia? In my family everybody had a full set of hair except my father he is a NW5 at 64 he didn't start losing it till his 30s, and my mom's brother didn't start to lose it till his late 20s he became a NW3 with some mid anterior thinning and stayed that way (he's 40 now). Everybody else cousins, uncles, grandfathers etc. even as far as great grand fathers had great hair (Norwood 2 the most), others even had a flat hairline.

So you're a nw2? And you have little hairloss in your family history.
You could just be getting a mature hairline, the chances are you'll never be a NW6 or 7 if it is'nt in your family history. By the sounds of it you could be worrying about nothing.

I'm a NW2 but about 7 months ago I noticed my left temple getting weak (miniaturized) my right temple too but not as weak as the left one, I developed a little spot in the front middle on my forelock and overall the first 1/2 inch of my hairline has less volume and is more spaced and I went to a derm he said it's male pattern baldness and a hair specialist confirmed it with a miniaturization test, so that's how I know. He said right now I'm on a NW2 but the pattern on the miniturization showed exactly my uncle's pattern (Norwood 3 with mid anterior thinning) but it doesn't mean it's my final pattern!

I don't think there is a gauranteed pattern for anyone, even if they are not using treatment. My Uncle started losing his hair at the age of 18. By 21 it was very thin all over. He is now in his 60s and it looks exactly the same as it did when he was 21. When you look at old photographs of him it is incredible to see that his hair loss did not get any worse. Surely the thinning hair should have eventually fallen out, but it never did. It just goes to show that people may stop on a certain level of hair loss; it may never get worse.

Also my other question if you have weak male pattern baldness family history like me is there a good chance for Propecia to work for many years? Because I have a friend whose family history is very bad a bunch of guys with Norwood 5-7 and he has been on Propecia for about 8 years and his hair is still great (he is 31 now).

It's possible situations like that which make me worried when I see youngsters post pics of their hair with slight recession/thinning, and a load of responses such as 'Get on propecia NOW!'. You don't know how much, or if it will progress and at what pace, at least watch it for a few months before making a decision. You don't want to be taking something like finasteride unnecessarily.


As for the original poster, it's impossible to predict with certainty, but my initial thought would be that unless you live to 150, you'd be unlikely to go completely bald.

I know NW2 aka mature hairline is by no means balding, hence many of my family members got it in their early 20s and stayed that way till today or till death. Actors like Johnny Depp and Ewan Mcgregor are good examples, they been having NW2 for very long and still do. I had it too but several months ago I noticed the front is getting weaker and which means I'm heading up and then came a little spot in the front of my forelock and that's how I knew it's happening hence a miniturization test confirmed male pattern baldness!
