Why does hair stop growing at a certain length?

I forgot the numbers, but I know I read that hair on a guy will only grow to a certain length, which is shorter than the max length of a girl.

How does the hair follicle "know" that its hair- which is not living or anything- is a certain length? Ever think about this? Any theories?

Its not so much that it knows how long of a hair it has produced. Its moreso that its pre-programmed to keep kicking out hair 'material' for a certain period of time, and then shut down and go into dormancy for awhile... only to re-awaken and start over again. The hair cycle is all about time. Thats what shedding is as well.. synchronization of the hair producing time/dormancy time. Everything's on a schedule :)

Yeah it is all about natural life cycles and dormancy of the follicle will of course stop it's growth.

I definatley think that with all outside non-natural stressors like drugs, sh*tty foods it acutally throws the body out of whack. This includes the hairs natural cycles. Which could result in speeding up male pattern baldness.
