Guys, I will not say my whole story again. ..In short, I will quit finasteride after 2.5 years of use.
However, nobody refered in this forum on how is the best (or correct) way to quit finasteride..
In another forum, I read that people pay attention on how to quit finasteride. Some people claim that the best way is to start reducing the dose or taking it day after day before quiting it completely...Is there any importance in the way that you quit finasteride in terms of side effects (hair loss)?? thanks

There is no really best way or importance in a way to quit finasteride in terms of side effects, its not like other medications for example Prednisone were you have to gradually reduce the amount you take. The only thing is if you gain or maintain any hair then most likely you will start loosing your hair again.

I dont think that it takes only 30days or so..to reach pre finasteride dht levels...I think that it takes about 6 months to reach these levels. ..For example, I tried to quit finasteride in the past (no finasteride for a whole month..september 2007) and I had only a little improvement with erections and no hair loss. So, it takes more to become a pre finasteride human being...and depends on the person..

In your head bud.
As bubka just showed, no way finasteride is still affecting you after 6 months. dutasteride wouldn't even be affecting you then and it has a much longer half life

Okey, I havent done any research on that..so maybe you are right. But I read that you lose the finasteride-saved-hair gradually during the coming next months (and not during the first month, when you reach the dht levels, according to your info..)Am I right? Personally, I would prefer to experience the whole hair loss within the first month, in order to estimate the situation and decide what to do next..

hair loss is a slow process, you didn't start losing over night, so you will not start losing again overnight after stopping finasteride

Bubka and Jayman,

which product would you recommend as a dht blocker if you were in my place and had to stop finasteride?
I just want to hear your opinion as senior posters..
I would not be willing to try a product which could give me sexual sides again (i.e. finasteride-product, dutasteride, spironolactone etc..) so would you recommend revivogen? Does it have sexual sides? other product?

Just to add that I use Rogaine 5% only once a day (night), tretinoin cream 0.05% twice per week, Anastim 3 times per week, fenugreek capsules once a day (for the next 30days...just happen to bought Folligro fenugreek capsules..)

Thank you

If you're looking for an alternative to finasteride..

I had great success with saw palmetto. There is a great combo pill (called The Prostate formula) sold at Walgreens that I used for the past 3 years. It contains Saw palmetto 320 mg/pygeum bark 300mg/stinging nettle 100mg/pumpkin seed 100mg.

Now I have upgraded to finasteride (.25 mg to minimize sides) to bring out the big guns since it feels like I'm slowly losing ground. IMO, this is the next best DHT blocker to finasteride/dutasteride out there.

And FYI, I did experience mild sides w/SP (similar to that of what I hear on this board related to finasteride) but they were manageable...

...my friend, I know about Saw Palmetto, but I also know that it has the same or even worse sexual side effects and unproved effectiveness, so why to try Saw Palmetto pills and not stay at finasteride, with which I had EXCELLENT results ?? (even slight regrowth I think..). ?

I believe that if you use finasteride, or dutasteride, or Saw, internally, you are in the same boat..

Thats why I am thinking of revivogen, which claims not to have sides..dont know about its effectiveness though..and I just want to maintain..not even a single new hair..

HairRebirth, you're not the only person who feels that Finasteride was affecting their system for a hell of a lot longer than a few weeks after quitting it. It's been a complaint from some others that the effects stretch into many months after quitting.

I don't really know of any good medical explanations for this situation, but finasteride users do complain of it on a semi-regular basis. Most seem to feel that the effects are indeed reversing themselves but it's a very slow process for some guys.

Just stay healthy and give it time.

thanks cal,
personally I find it quite reasonable that it takes more time to be yourself again after 3 years of taking finasteride...

As for the diagram of bubka, maybe is more right for short term users of finasteride. Dont forget that there is no many research on the effects of long term use of finasteride...so, do not swear on diagrams..

Finasteride has a short half-life (5-6 hours), so the length of time you take it should make no difference. As for long-term research, well the Proscar long-term efficacy and safety study (PLESS) lasted 4 years and the prostate cancer trial lasted 7 years. The drug has been in clinical use for nearly 16 years.

The half-life of the drug doesn't last very long but the time it takes for hormone levels to fully return to normal is a whole differnt animal.

Even then, I don't think the long term waits for all the effects to subside are explained that way.

I dunno. Different people's bodies behave differently.
