My dermatologist does not want to to proscribe me proscar and will only proscribe me propecia. As you all know, propecia is far more expensive than proscar and a generic of proscar costs only $9.

My question to you all is when generics of propecia will be available in stores.

Also, for those that live in New Jersey, are there any dermatologists that you can recommend that would proscribe generic finasteride?

I can't afford to take buy months and months of propecia. Maybe if I cut it up in halves or even quarters it might make costs bearable. However, how effective is a quarter of propecia anyway?

Dude you need to get a better derm then. A good derm will give you generic 5mg finasteride and explain why even if you request propecia. My derm had no problem giving me finasteride and thinks it is outrageous that propecia is the same thing and costs dozens of times more. He is looking out for me and not the drug companies. He also understands how hard it is emotionally for young men to lose their hair and he thinks insurance ought to cover finasteride, which it will if your derm prescribes it as proscar. Even if you do pay for your finasteride, It costs about $2 per MONTH if you cut the 5mg pills in four and buy 90 at a time from Wal-Mart. It costs nearly $2 per DAY if you use propecia. Your derm should be ashamed of him or her self.

To answer your question though. I don't think generic 1mg finasteride will be available until sometime in 2013.
