I always see at the bottom of some of the posters that part of their regimen is drinking green tea, Whats up with that? Does green tea help in the battle against male pattern baldness?

I doubt that there's any significant benefit to hairloss just from DRINKING green tea, because EGCG (the main polyphenol found in the stuff) is poorly absorbed from the GI tract. However, I feel there's a reasonable chance that a topical application could be helpful, because it could get the EGCG right where it needs to go: directly to the hair follicles. A fairly recent study did indeed find that topical EGCG successfully inhibited the hamster flank-organ. Topical EGCG was also shown to reduce sebum production (which is highly dependent on androgens) in a small human test. The stuff has possibilities, IMHO, but only when applied topically.

You wont see any growth on Green Tea... It's merely a good anti-oxidant. Something good for general health I guess.

???

It's not just "merely a good anti-oxidant". It's been shown to inhibit 5a-reductase. That's the rationale for using it to fight hairloss.

Yet, as you've stated ad nauseum Bryan, we don't know how much someone would need to drink, and I believe you or someone else accurately stated that it would probably far more than anyone could possibly drink on a daily basis. Even then we have no evidence that it will affect hair counts.

It should also be pointed out that a lot of things inhibit 5alpha. Doesn't mean they all help hair loss when ingested orally. In fact i think it would be a lot more scientific based on the data we do have on 5 alpha reductase inhibitors to assume that most don't do a thing to affect hair counts after 1 to 2 years. There's more to the equation than just the ability to inhibit 5alpha.

I was specifically referring to its topical application.

Even then, the same problems come in which make it nearly useless, or at the very most a total shot in the dark. As I mentioned, just being able to inhibit 5a isn't enough information. How often must one apply it topically? In what solution? With what vehicle? In what dosage? .... in order to result in benefit to hair loss.

If we don't have any of this information, Im not clear on the value of even discussing it.

In order for something to be useful as a hair loss treatment, several questions should be answered, not just the question of 5a inhibition.

Lots of things are said to inhibit 5a. I could inhibit 5a if I had a small enough Net to catch it with. Practicality and effectiveness are just as important as knowing it can inhibit.

But we DO have a pretty fair amount of information on all that! For the last couple of years I've been discussing the relevant studies on the hairloss sites. They used standard vehicles like ethanol, and typical doses like what you'd expect (a few milligrams). This isn't just an academic exercise!

No haircounts...the tests were on the effects on sebaceous glands.
