What happened to all the hype about dutasteride?

Is it much much better then propecia like it was supposed to be by suppressing both types of DHT or has it been over hyped and isn't all that. I read through all the posts on the Dutasteride thread but haven't seen any real concrete results even then some people should have been on it to see significant results by now.

it's supposed to get rid of 98% of DHT in the body, yet i'll bet it doesn't work for everyone. if this is the case then it's obvious there's still work to be done to figure out other causes of hair loss.

exactly. Eradicating all DHT is only part of the puzzle. Obviously, finasteride only gets rid of a percentage of DHT (38% in the scalp) and it works. I wouldnt mess with dutasteride, way too many possible side effects when you totally annihilate DHT.

Its basically chemical castration.

Oh, btw, even castrated people dont grow any hair back - they only maintain

i wouldn't use this medication. i am a medical student, and i realize the importance of these enzymes. propecia is a type II 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, and duasteride is a type I and II 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. these enzymes are found in various bodily tissues. although propecia seems to be safe and side effects minimal, duasteride would have much stronger side effects. i can't believe that this drug would be prescribed for hair loss. it would theoretically work better than finasteride, but with a bigger price to pay.

from all the other message boards i've been reading with people using it, it doesn't seem like it's that great of a drug. a lot of people quit it after 2 or 3 months use because of reported frontal loss. maybe it's due to the increase it causes in test. levels.

I have never heard it prescribed for hair loss. peolple take it on their own. Dr. Lee said he would never ever prescribe this to a patient. Propecia gets rid of 30-40% of DHT which is sufficient and allows the body to function normally.
Avodart blocks like 80-90% which I feel is very dangerous, you need some DHT for bodily functions. This stuff cant be good.

Agreed. While we did report of its existence when it was released, we also took a very conservative approach constantly warning users of potential for side effects, while other sites did nothing to warn their users, and in fact promoted it across the board. We actually published an article by a doctor who was very concerned about this same thing:

http://www.hairlosstalk.com/newsletter/article201.htm

Naturally, the hairsite "enthusiasts" criticized both HairlossTalk and accused this doctor of having "financial interest" to hold his position. Money seems to be the big cop out sometimes. The reality is, the clinical data is insufficient right now, and therefore you do run a risk. It's also significant that Glaxo did not finish the FDA trials and release it as a hair loss treatment.

As Redbone said, even Dr. Lee was not in agreement with some of these websites so actively promoting it like they were. We are concerned about the health and safety of our users.

If you are using it, please listen to your body if it tells you something is up.

As for it not being that great of a drug... 1) I never listen to people's personal reports on discussion forums, including reports on Dutasteride and 2) If they're quitting after 2-3 or even 6 months, they didn't give it long enough (to either destroy their body or fix their hair, we're not sure which yet :-D)
