What type of Hair loss is mine?

Hey Guys..

I am turning 30 in a couple of months.. I have been experiencing slow hair loss from past few years. All of a sudden in a couple of weeks, I am seeing extreme hair loss. Till date I havent taken any treatment for hair loss. Not even a single pill.

Please see the pics and help me in identifying if it is a male pattern baldness. Based on the pics, can you guys suggest what should treatment should I start?

You have male pattern baldness.

I don't like to recommend anything really, but someone will probably recommend some or all of the "big 3". I've used finasteride and dutasteride for years, minoxidil for months, and ketoconazole for years. (I still use ketoconazole to this day due to financial constraints, and with your aggressive hair loss I would recommend considering it, although it is something I am looking to stop using.) I am not here to disparage any of these treatments, but if I were you (even with your aggressive hair loss) I would be more inclined to use some or all of the following treatments:

Superoxide dismutase
GHK copper peptides
Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate (possibly with MSM)
Lithium in DMSO
Adenosine
Curcumin
Zinc PCA
Keratinocyte Growth Factor
Tea Tree Oil
Cedarwood Essential Oil
Lavender Essential Oil
Thyme Essential Oil
Peppermint Oil
Soy isoflavones
Some or all of the ingredients in Revivogen (so maybe just Revivogen)
Corosolic acid

Honestly if I gave it more thought the list could probably go on. My best advice is to put the time in on the forum if this sort of treatment regimen is something you are considering.

I would recommend considering coal tar extract as a topical but not every day. (This is another non-natural treatment I am hoping I can avoid having to use.)

Note that lavender and tea tree oil are mildly estrogenic so there is the chance of man boobs, I would not use them every day as topicals. I wouldn't use any essential oil as a topical everyday actually, I've tried that before and was not really "feeling it", but with moderation and some fine topical making it might feel right.

Soy isoflavones are also estrogenic although I think less so. In fact, some people recommend it as a supplement to prevent gynecomastia because they say the phytoestrogens are much less estrogenic than real hormones, so if they are attached to the estrogen receptors in your breasts it will prevent more estrogenic estrogens from attaching.

I believe there is a decent amount of science behind most of these alternative treatments.

I also recommend vitamins/minerals/nutraceuticals, I would recommend you check out Immortal Hair's regimen for ideas. Internal soy (so the isoflavones might convert to equol in the intestinal tract...it does not happen with everyone) is also something to consider.

u dont have any hairloss. Anyone who shaves their head and takes photos of it would look like that. but it stands out more the darker ur hair is, because theres more contrast between the dark hair and the skin.

seriously. just cos u can see the scalp, doesnt mean youve lost hair. Its just when u look straight down at short hair, it just appears as dots, which u see straight past. look at it from a different angle and i bet it looks fine.

youve nothing to worry about at this point.

but people are going to tell u u do, and u should start meds etc. I wouldnt start meds at least until i was sure i was losing.

Thanks for the reply guys... I just have a short hair cut this time, even in the past I have had short hair cut but never saw my scalp through it, it was always thick and full of hairs.. I am getting worried now.

I was doing some research and thinking of starting with Finpecia (for its cost) and Minoxidil 5%. Atleast for the hope that I could retain the hair I have now and wait for a better treatement in near future.

What do you guys think.. anyone on Finpecia with positive results please let me know...

One more question, if the follicle itself comes out of the scalp with the hair, is there a chance that a new hair follicle grows back in the same place?

And yep, people are going to tell him meds are the best course of saving his hair. No surprises there!

When you lose your hairs, are there white bulbs attached to the end? That used to happen to me, and I assume it was sebum deposits.

Yeah, I do see white bulbs attached to the end. What does this mean? Does sebum deposit mean hair loss?

It likely means that DHT is making your sebaceous gland overproduce sebum. Bacteria feed off sebum and I'm sure its build-up can't be beneficial for the normal functioning of a hair follicle even if that weren't the case.

Ketoconazole reduces sebum production and binds to androgen receptors, so I recommend you consider it as a hair loss treatment. But also, it really dries the hair, so I've theorized it helps to flush out sebum, so I would recommend at least using it at the beginning to try to break-up the sebum deposits.

Before I got hair loss I didn't notice what my hairs looked like. I just know that since using ketoconazole shampoos they stopped being like that. All of this FWIW.

Finasteride seems to be is most effective on the crown, I would expect that you should see at least moderate regrowth at the crown but I doubt you'll see any regrowth on the hairline. However, finasteride is good for maintenance, so even if you don't grow any new hair you should be able to maintain your hair both on the crown and hairline. However, you should know that sometimes people get side effects from finasteride so do some research and make sure you're willing to take the risk. I think it's wort the risk and if you get side effects you can just stop, but others would disagree.
