What should I do? (with pics)

Hey guys,

For a few years my hair has been thinning a bit, but it hasn't been noticeable. Unfortunately thats not the case anymore. Over the past few months I've had a number of (rather insensitive!) people mention it to me, so I think I need to address it in some way.

Thing is I only turned 20 last week so none of my friends are in the same boat. My father and grandfather both have the "horseshoe" style hair, bald on top. Looks like I'm heading that way myself, my scalp is clearly visible at my crown and I am receding at the front and its just generally thinning.

So what should I do? I'm tempted to just get the clippers out and give myself a number 2 or something, but with my headshape I'm afraid I would look stupid. I'm a bit embarrassed about the whole thing so I'm afraid that shaving my hair so short will only highlight the fact that I'm losing my hair. (but now that people have noticed thats a bit of a moot point?)

I have pictures taken but I can't upload them, I will be able to post them in the morning when I can get on a different PC. But if I was to describe my head I would say that it is quite large, I have a tall forehead. I guess if I had to pick a celeb with a headshape closest to mine I would say Matt Damon.

I know you can't really say much until you see the pics but does anyone have any advise or anything? This has got me a bit down, since it was said to me I have been quite self conscious about it and dunno what to do.

Thanks

You can do only two things:

1) Accept, as untold millions of men have done, that you will be eventually balding or bald. Long term, it is the easiest solution of them all and your lack of hair will not be an indication that you've failed as a human being. Some of the greatest people were bald.

or

2) Do something about it ASAP. The only solution available today that is scientifically proven to slowdown hairloss, prevent it and/or to regrow hair is Propecia (Finasteride - or 1/4th Proscar, if you want to save a ton of money). You will just have to watch out for anti-Propecia weirdos that lurk online with nothing else to do but to blame Propecia for all their failures. I would strongly suggest that you simply ignore their emotional fear-mongering.

yes there the 2 options, i chose number 2 a month ago!

just try some rogaine foam or try topical min. give it several months and wash with nizoral aswell or a ketoconazole shampoo

if that doesnt work try propecia older you are the better I heard.
I was scared to take it because of scary comments, but i'm fine on it now and just as horny and hard

basically what people call the big 3, they guys on here suggesting it to me and i've jumped straight on it.
I can tell you now it releaves alot of stress just knowing your doing something, well it has for me.

Think positive!

Exactly what the guys said above me.

Obviously you'll need to do your research and make the decision yourself. Right now you should at least go to your nearest chemist and buy 2% Nizoral, I've being using that since July and while I noticed some shedding in the first month or so it has thickened my hair up very nicely.

When I style my hair I can get to look something around a Norwood 1.5, although I'd say a 1.8 myself, lol.

I myself will be starting .50mg of finasteride in a week or so, although I'm wouldn't say I'm noticeably receding, I can see it on close inspection.

The worst thing about is I'm known for having the big spikey hair, always get positive comments on it although my mates give me stick calling me Jedward or Elvis, lol, although it's nothing like their's.

Hello again, here are some pics I took this morning just after I had a shower

Bare in mind I'm just after drying my hair, when it settles down/loses volume it looks a good deal worse. Usually you can see much more scalp, right up toward my forehead and a clear circle of tinning hair all around my crown.

With my headshape do you reckon I would look decent with a real short cut, a number 2 or something, or should I just try and ignore it because its not that bad?

I'm absolute dirt poor atm, college is bleeding me dry, so expensive regimens are pretty much out for the time being, till the summer at earliest.

Again, only IF you want to keep your hair, I would NOT ignore it. Every day you wait, you'll have less chance to keep what you have or to regrow. You have to get on Finasteride ASAP. Here's what you do: today make an appointment with a dermatologist (preferably one that says they treat hairloss on their website), ask him or her to proscribe for you a generic Proscar (5mg Finasteride). You may want to call ahead to confirm they will do this for you so that you don't waste your time. If not, find another one that will. If you have no health insurance, derm visit may cost you (usually under $200 - or may be they'll give you a break if you tell them you are a poor student). Ask the derm to give you as many refills as possible from get go (so that you don't have to hassle with them).

Then, take your prescription to nearest Walmart. It will cost you around $10 for 30 pills (4 months of treatment) of generic Proscar - $30 or $40 for the whole year of hair treatment (affordable enough?). Get a pill splitter at Walmart as well. You will be splitting each pill into 4 parts (easy, with practice) and take one piece every single day (I take one every morning before breakfast - but it doesn't really matter when as long as you do it consistently).

What are you doing still waiting and staring at your computer? Your thinning hair is not going to stay on your head or regrow by itself! (Reminder: ignore anti-Propecia trolls).

Thanks for all the replies, I should probably have mentioned I live in Ireland so no wallmarts and the like for me, and it take forever to see a dermatologist publically, mega expensive privately.

I'm thinking of giving myself a number 3 and seeing how it looks, then taking things from there. Do you reckon my head shape would suit a buzz cut like that? (I've never had short hair, the length in the pic is the shortest I've had it in forever).

Not sure on Ireland laws ect, but you can possibly get the pills online very inexpensively and get them shipped to you no doctor required from a few reputable sites.

I'm skint aswell pal, maybe this will help.

bought 30x5mg fincar of inhouse pharmacy europe for £15.08.
i'm taking 0.625mg per day, so it'll will last me 240 days/ 8 months
They deliver to UK and N.I

3 bottles of minoxidil off ebay £18 i'm using about 0.2ml on my hairline every day.
so 180ml/0.2 well it could last about 15 months twice a day
if you did 0.5ml on your vertex you'd get 6 months i think.

so about 33 quid pretty cheap, or under 60 a year.

I have heard of people visiting hair transplant doctors for free prescriptions for finasteride. See if that is an option for you
