What Are The Potential Side Effects Of Minoxidil?

Hi guys,

I’m keen to learn a little more about minoxidil and it’s potential side effects. I’ve read some research but it would be good to get some anecdotal info too.

So:
  • What side effects have people experienced (either you or anyone you know)? and have they lasted the whole time you’ve been taking it?
  • How common are these side effects? and do they go once coming off minoxidil?
  • Do most people experience some form of side effect from using minoxidil?
  • Has anyone experienced a worsening of their hair as a result of taking minoxidil?
Also, slightly off topic but over the last week or so I’ve shed a ton of hair generally all over my head (literally raining hair when I dried it post shower the other day) which I think may be down to being stupidly stressed out over the last 3ish months. I understand that shedding hair around 3 months after stress levels being high isn’t abnormal and that hair loss from stress is rarely permanent. Is this still the case if i’ve got male pattern baldness or do I have to say goodbye to that hair forever?

Finally, I understand that shedding hair soon after starting on minoxidil is fairly common. How much hair is typically shed and if I have a relatively full head of hair, is it likely to be noticeable?

A lot of questions there so cheers to anyone in advance for their input.

Tommy

You're over thinking this way too much. Just put the damn stuff on your head

If you ever take propecia you will almost definitely get nocebo

Yup maybe. I just don't want to screw myself up in one way or another for the sake of vanity. I've already ruled out propecia

It's more likely to help you than hurt you.

Nothing vain about wanting to avoid the balding stigma in 2017

Yeah true. Have you heard of many people having cardiac side effects though? And is the initial shedding after starting minoxidil quite noticeable?

Off the top of my head I can't think of anyone mentioning experiencing that side effect.

I personally never noticed any extra shedding going on when I started minoxidil

No side effects from minoxidil other than you may have some slight flaking or dying of the scalp - particularly if you are putting too much on or not rubbing it in evenly. Be sure to apply evenly, consistently and if you start flaking like crazy lower your dosage. Use Nizoral shampoo to help this.

I once too was worried about taking finasteride like yourself - I have been on it for two months now without a single side effect to report. Give it a try - if you are among the 1-2% who actually react negatively to it (and not just placebo effect) you can always stop. No harm done and so much possible to gain. You will really regret not trying if you continue to bald past the point of no return.

I did not have any noticeable shedding from either. I responded incredibly well to minoxidil (quite insane actually) - however after about a year and a half I returned back to where I was since I was not stopping the hair loss at the root cause, hence why I hopped onto finasteride as well. We shall see what happens!
