How often does this occur?

e.g. just say your thinning at the front and receding on the temples at 24 then is it possible that your hair remains like this for a while and recedes very slowly until your 40 ? or would you be fucked by 30
?

Everyone is different. For some people the process is very, very slow and never reach any severe levels, even tho it started early. For some they can lose a lot in months or 1-2 years. George Bush father was a nw3 at young age....and hes the same today.....perhaps little different.
You could be nw3 by the age of 25 and still be a nw3 at the age of 40. Hairloss is very unpredictable and almost no two people experience it the same.

My brother had a little bit of temple recession at around 17 and then stopped. His hair has been Norwood 1.5 for 15years with no changes in density

I went from Norwood 1.5 to very little hair in the space of a year

Hair loss can be unpredictable and people you'd think would be bald in a few years are still hanging on and vice versa.

I suppose the only thing you can guarantee is that your hair isn't going to get any better.

I believe it can, my dad was NW2 maybe 2.5 in his mid twenties and now he is over 50 with an early NW3v. I think it depends on your pattern and susceptibility. For instance, someone who has a receding pattern which would then be followed by crown thinning may not experience the crown thinning for years as the follicules at the back may be more resistant than the others. So what you are left with is the appearance of hair loss which has stopped, but will resume when the hairs at the back have been affected. I can confirm this to be true, at least in my fathers case.

It's gut wretching. Do you take propecia early and risk side effects? or do you wait it out and hope it doesn't worsen? If it gets worse, will it get even worse?

Hair loss always gets worse if it is male pattern baldness.

Of course. It's a matter of how fast. I'd be extremely content if my hairline stabilises and only recedes very slowly for the rest of my life. I doubt that'll happen considering how many family members from my mom's side have gotten rekt by male pattern baldness.

Same for my family, my dad is the only one who made it into his 50s with minimal loss.

It's a dice roll I am personally not willing to take. You could stay at NW2-3 for a long time or you could rapidly progress to NW7 in 2 or 3 years.

Indeed, for some people they probably do have a 2 year "aggressive" window from 20 - 22.

And it could slow down till 30 when it goes "kamikaze" on your *** sending you to Norwood 5.

For me it's my dad's brother (uncle?). He had an amazing head of hair for someone who was of extremely poor health, unfortunately he passed away 2 years younger than my dad. Most other older family members (30+) have a horse shoe, including my dad.

I know we are saying this over and over. But hairloss is unpredictable as hell. And you can never know it's true faith before you are "there". It can start early and stop entirely, you may have a full head of hair at your 35s and be bald at 40...it can simple take any form possible and its impossible to know. That can also be a good sign for some. People that might think they are going bald but infact they are not........so its just something you'll have to wait and see.
