Hi all my this is my first post here..I am 25 and started on propecia in feb 2010 then switched to finasteride 5mg - splitting into fourths in may 2010.

I can't really say if I've regrown hair over this short amount of time, but it has finally gotten rid of the annoying ITCH in the hairline and where it is receding, and the temples as well. The itch has continued though in the back of my scalp and along the crown even while I've been on 1.5mg of finasteride daily. I figured as long as I'm still having the itch I am going to continue losing my hair in that area

So about a week ago I've decided to take 1.25 of finasteride in the morning..and 1.25 in the late afternoon (6pm) since I have had absolutely zero side affects since I've begun taking this drug. I've also started taking 40mg of zinc oxide vitamins in the afternoon (not taking them right after i take finasteride). The itchiness in the crown and back part of my head has completely gone away for now..but it has only been a week since I've started doing this.

I also use selsum blue medicated shampoo and switch back and forth with prescribed ketaconazole 2% shampoo (these do absolutely NOTHING when it comes to relieving my scalp itch!!!!)

I will keep you posted and am looking for any feedback, critique, questions..etc

There is no difference. Propecia is finasteride.

Thanks, and Proscar the same,
What is dutasteride?

Propecia\Finpecia\Proscar\Fincar are all the same thing, just different doseages and generic vs namebrand.

Dutasteride, or Avodart (the brand name) is a different drug altogether. It is similar to finasteride in that it blocks 5AR type 2, usually at a higher success rate (closer to 90% as opposed to 70-75% for finasteride). However, it also blocks 5AR type 1. Both of these things lead to increase side effects in people.

It also has a longer half life, so after you quit taking it it might be a very long time before the dutasteride is altogether out of your system. finasteride is out within days.

Yeah, I've experienced the same. I'm on TRT, and when I increase the testosterone dose, my scalp begin itching and hair falls off. It seems like increasing the finasteride dose as well, solves that.

Enden, sorry to ask off topic, but what type of TRT are you on (delivery method) and what weekly dose?

I've been using testogel earlier, but I'm now doing IM injections (testosterone enanthate). I've been experimenting with doses and frequency the last weeks. I'm currently on 200 mg a week, which seems to be a little too much, but I'm going to be consistent with that until the blood test. My finasteride dose is 1 mg/day per 100 mg Telogen Effluvium/week, and I'm currently using 2.5 mg finasteride a day, which relieves me from scalp itching/hairloss.

well its been about a week and a half since I've started this..there was no itch at first but the itching has returned but only slightly in the back..i applied Clobetasol Propionate topical solution to my scalp this morning which i got from my dermatologist to get rid of the slight itch..WHOOPS!

you're only supposed to apply it at night..and the itching has become so bad on my crown now that its put me in a pissed off mood..I'm using the end of a philips screwdriver to scratch my scalp right now. probably not the best tool.

I don't know if i want to regrow hair or just stop the god damn itch at this point

It's probably a scalp problem, as long as you don't have that tingling/itchy feeling while shedding hairs. Nizoral is good at maintaining a healthy scalp, but maybe you need something stronger at this point. How does your scalp look?

Thanks for that explanation, I'm guessing it has better effects on hair though. Also guessing most docs only know of Propecia and wouldn't know about this one

its been a few weeks now since ive started this..i even went back to my usual dose one week where i would just take 1.25 mg of finasteride and the itch remained and was sometimes bad in the evening..

ive gone back to taking 2.5 of the finasteride (1.25 in the morning and 1.25 in the evening) and it really seems like its getting rid of the itch or keeping it at an all time low across my scalp. In my opinion everbody is different and maybe some people need more than others? One thing for sure though is my itchy scalp was a lot worse a year ago than it is now. and i've only been taking finasteride since february 2010.

small update 7/13 - its been a couple more weeks now since I've started taken 2.5mg finasteride daily..and am just now starting to get some noticeable pain in the testicle area..nothing too bad, this would be the first side effect I've ever noticed though since taking the drug back in February. other than that everything else is working fine and there is still hardly no scalp itch at all

I've noticed if I increase my finasteride doseage I get testicle pain again, but if I keep at that doseage it goes away again.

This seems to happen almost always, regardless of the amount I increase by. I'm trying to keep it steady at 1.25 though (those fincar tablets are HARD to cut)

Just cut them in half and take half a pill a day. Or you could take a whole pill every other day.
