Washing Hair?

I'm a twenty-year old college student experiencing premature hair loss. I have posted here several times before. Since I can remember, I've never washed my hair correctly. Since I started to notice patches of hairloss with no particular pattern near the part of my hair over summer, I've started to wash my hair better. I now gently scrub my scalp for approximately 2-3 minutes, but notice a lot of sted. I'm guessing this is because my hair is weak from the years of not washing correctly?

I can't figure out why i'm experiencing thinning areas, except for large amount of stress for quite a few months before i noticed the thinning. Hair loss is not in my family, anywhere. Since, it has gotten a little worse. I am no on Propecia, but I have only been on it several months, so I am not noticing results yet.

Can the way I used to wash be a reason for why my hair is thinning now?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, I don't quite follow. Are you saying your hair loss is in patches? Also, there is no history of hair loss in your family? Have you seen a derm who specializes in hair? Have you had blood work done, specifically your thyroid (TSH, T3, T4 levels), checked? I am assuming you have seen a physician -- had a physician actualy look at you -- and he has given you this prescription for propecia?

No. This is extremely unlikely.

Yes, I've been to a dermatologist. She didn't check my thyroid, though. I had a phase where I ate unhealthy in early 2004. In Spring of 2005, I stopped eating beef, and started dramatically cutting back on junk food, so I've lost a good deal of weight since my "pudgy venture."

I have something similar I think. No hair on my chest nipples. Hair all around it, but not on them themselves. I think I have alopecia areola?
