I want to temporarirly give up minoxidil. Recently my scalp has become pretty painfull and I think its the all the topicals as ive recently started RU58841 but I wanna give that a fair shot. Ive been using minoxidil for years and haven't seen anything major so...

1) If you feel like its not working why would you have a shed and increased hair loss if you quit?

2) Would giving up and then coming back with a stronger dose work better?

3) Ive read reports effects of minoxidil wane after a few years , is this true?

I have quit minoxidil recently (4 months ago). It definitely wasn't horror but yes I have lost some hair cause of that. If you are completely sure minoxidil did jack **** for you then you can quit it without losing almost anything. You probably lacked the enzyme sulfotransferase in first place to make it effective for you. Now I'm just cruising on RU58841 just like you. If you have had good results with minoxidil however, and you will drop it you are going to lose all of what you have gained so..

This happens:

Check his early videos when he was on minoxidil to see how much he lost.

That's not true if OP didn't have great results with minoxidil from the start and he is sure about that he won't get a big loss like that. You'll just fall down to baseline from where you had started.

You never know how much minoxidil is actually doing unless you quit it but prepare yourself because you may shed a lot, it's a Telogen Effluvium, the hairs will be back to where you were if you never used minoxidil.

Sure but minoxidil efficacy depends on sulfotransferase, studies have pointed this out and there is even a clinical trial running for this; https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/study/NCT02198261?term=minoxidil&rank=1. OP might be someone who has seen 0% positive effects from his minoxidil usage and in that case continuing minoxidil is completely worthless. If you however had results and you quit you will lose them indeed. I agree too that it can be sometimes hard to gauge what results you have gotten especially when you are on more than 1 treatment.

Topical minoxidil is the most common drug used for the treatment of Androgenetic Alopecia in men. While topical minoxidil exhibits a good safety profile, the efficacy in the overall population remains relatively low i.e., 30-40% re-grow hair. To observe significant improvement in hair growth, minoxidil is typically used twice daily for a period of at least 16 weeks. Due to the significant time commitment and low response rate, a diagnostic test to identify non-responders prior to initiating therapy would be advantageous.
Minoxidil is converted in the scalp to its active form, minoxidil sulfate, by the sulfotransferase enzyme SULT1A1. The enzyme expression is variable among individuals. We have demonstrated in two prior feasibility studies that the SULT1A1 enzyme activity in plucked hair follicles correlates with minoxidil response in the treatment of Androgenetic Alopecia and thus can server as a predictive biomarker.

Massa, are you using minoxidil alone or are you also on finasteride? I have been throwing the idea of adding RU to my regimen(minoxidil and finasteride) and was wondering if that would be overkill.

Also has anybody added RU after finasteride use of 1.5 years and got additional regrowth?

I was on finasteride but wasn't happy with the results so I'm now on dutasteride and just added ru . I'd say it is overkill but as I'm young and get no sides from any of these I thought I might as well throw the kitchen sink .
