I'm a long-time member, even though I haven't posted here too often. I'm 47 years old, and began losing my hair in my 20's. It was a VERY slow process, I had a thick head of hair, and I was on Rogaine right when it came out (I actually used minoxidil before that - prescribed from my dermatologist and compounded). As soon as Propecia hit the market (I believe in '97 or 98), I was on it. Long story short, no one would EVER suspect that I had been thinning - I kept a very full head of hair. Gradually, around 2004, Propecia seemed to be losing it's effectiveness, and my personal physician prescribed Avodart. At first, I took it daily, but he himself told me he only took in once a week. So, for the past years I've taken it anywhere from once to twice a week. I also combined this with Dr. Lee's Xandrox 5% in the morning and Xandrox 15% Plus at night. In addition, I used Dr. Lee's shampoos. If you look at my last post in 2009, I basically stated how hair loss wasn't really on my mind that much anymore. Now for an update:
Over the last year, my hair loss has been PROFOUND. Around March of 2010, I admitted myself to a treatment center for a pill addiction. I've been sober now since that time; however, I lost a relationship over it ... and needless to say, I was more stressed than EVER (my body was detoxing from substance abuse, I was alone, depressed, and heart-broken). For the 3 weeks I was in rehab, I didn't take any Avodart or Xandrox ... but when I came home in lat April of 2010, I quickly resumed my regimen. In fact, I upped the dosage and began taking Avodart every other day.
It's May 19th, 2011, I've been sober for over a year, but the hair is continuing to thin. I went back to Avodart twice a week, simply because every other day wasn't making a difference at all. Since Dr. Lee's products are sadly "no more", I now take the GAFF product from genhair (at night) along with 15% minoxidil and az-acid from Minoxmax. And, the 5% product during the day. My gosh, my scalp is getting the FULL treatment of minoxidil! In addition, I use 1% Nizoral every other day.
Here's my question: Would I be better off going back to Propecia EVERY day, instead of Avodart twice a week? It's been a LONG time since I've taken Propecia. I'm just wondering if my system would fare better on taking a pill every single day ... and I really don't want to take that much Avodart. So, I guess I'd like to hear from the experts - Propecia (or Proscar cut into quarters) every single day or Avodart twice a week? Any opinions would be appreciated ... my hair is losing ground quickly - the hairline is getting VERY thin! Any other feedback as to what I should do would be appreciated as well. I'm close to considering shaving my head, simply because I don't want to go through the torture of worrying about the wind, thin har, etc. Thanks!
