So I've been taking finasteride for about 5 months now and I've noticed my hair loss on the sides of my head is now worse than on my top (though it isn't far behind) this seems rather uncommon and I'm curious if there might be other reasons besides regular male pattern baldness

You're not alone. I only take finasteride for my temples as I am only NW2 on the hairloss scale (I apply minoxidil on these temples as well). However, I have thin sides and behind the ears and a receded napline. It's called retrograde alopecia and it's annoying, no treatment has shown any results as of now (7 months on finasteride and almost 4 months on minoxidil as I also apply minoxidil on these thin areas).

systemic medications affect all hairs, not only the male pattern baldness hairs....
