Using Propecia, will Rogaine help with frontal baldness?

Obviously on the Rogaine label says not for use with frontal balding, but how true is that? I figure hair is hair. I have a pretty bad widows peak. From where it peaks in the front, it probably goes back 2.5" on either side.

I'm 21 and have been taking Propecia since about 18. It seems to have stopped my loss, but I would like some gains...

Any thoughts? Thanks

Lots of people use rogaine for frontal loss...most frontal users (including myself) seem to go for the foam.

I just started it for my temples a little more than a week ago. Although I have heard of people on propecia starting rogaine and freaking out because they start a shed from it..so keep that in mind.

I dont know if I'm shedding from rogaine yet becxause I always friggin shed so who knows if its a rogaine shed or a regular shed or what haha

Im sure someone will correct me if i'm wrong but I believe there have been studies now that show rogaine works in the front

The whole shed thing is so bad for me though...my hair is like just thick enough now to kinda cover it up and I make it look DECENT at best...you can still tell I'm thinning though. With any shed it will look pretty bad...oh well

Also, does anyone know if wearing a hat makes you lose hair faster?

And is it alright to put the foam on at night, wake up 7 hours later in the morning and put it on again, without showering in between?

No thats just a myth.

Yes you can apply Rogaine 7hrs after your previous application without washing your scalp.

Awesome, thanks for the straight forward answers.

I'm in college, so I might wait until Christmas break (5 weeks) to start Rogaine, that way if I have a shed I won't be in school. Does that sound logical?

How long does the "shed" normally last?

And also, along with the Nizoral, what is a good shampoo to help thicken the hair I have now?

I only have 1% Nizoral, should I use it more frequently since its not 2%, is the 1% alright, or should I go to a doctor and get the 2% prescription?

Its difficult to know the time frame of a minoxidil shed, but I think most users report them within first couple months or so. I have been putting the foam along my hairline since the 1st of September and am yet to experience a shed.

Along with the shampoo I really dont know, I have been using Nioxin for past month. As for the Nizoral the 1% is reported as being just as effective and no you dont have to use it more about every 3 days or so.

I've also been looking at adding Nioxin system 6, do any of y'all have experience with it? Would that take place of the nizoral?

I use the Nioxin System 1, I really dont know about the system levels. No it should not replace Nizoral, that should still be used every 3rd day or so.

Rogain can help in all areas I belive just not clinicly prooven to work at front.

I have been on the big 3 with rogain foam, finasteride and nizoral shampoo for about 3 years.

Your lucky too have started at 18, so keep it up but definatly do the big 3 as early as you can I left it till 30 and by then all but too late almost !

It has helped a little at the front but the sides are just as weak sadly as they were before. I do however have 1000s of new white/dead hairs and some that grown but there so tiny you cant see them its a shame those sort of dead hairs cant sprout out to make new hairs.

Anyhow dispite considering giving it up I think ill keep trying or perhaps add something else too the treatment, would idealy like too get a hair transplant just for the front/sides that would at least give me some proper growth on the sides!

Yes, I have been looking at a hair transplant too. The kinds that doesn't leave the big scar in the back of your head.

Thats kind of what worries me. I feel that my hair isn't thinning a ton, but I do have a big widows peak. So maybe I shouldn't make my hair Minoxil dependent or whatever. Maybe I should just get a hair transplant and keep taking propecia and nizoral and that should keep everything where its at, plus the hair transplant will fill the rest in.

Hmm...just a tough choice. Rogaine will help, but wont be near as good as a hair transplant and a lot less daily work.

If I use Rogaine, and it doesn't grow much back or really do anything at all after 6 months, and I stop, will a bunch of my hair fall out? Or just what the Rogaine has specifically grown?

Yeah, starting at 18 was good I guess, but I have receeded some since then I feel, and thinned some. But oh well.

Any answers to my above question? I feel like using the Rogaine and getting dependent on it would be worse than just getting a hair transplant.

And if I have a big shed, which it seems most people do, I will not be able to wear my hair AT ALL how I wear it now...and I won't know what to do.

sh*t...

I was in the same exact same situation you were in and I waited a bit too late to do anything. I just started rogaine because I was still losing(slowly but still losing) my hair.

If I were you I would take a look at topical spironolactone. IF i knew more about it I would of done it 2 years ago. If the topical spironolactone doesn't help you add the rogaine.

Right now I am at the point that a bit more hairloss and it gets too noticeable so I went for the rogaine to get some regrowth....

The success forum has quite a few success stories where guys have regrown hair in their temple area with minoxidil, so how is it that it doesn't help?

What do you think it means to be "dependent" on Rogaine? Please be very specific.

I think its rare but yeah it can be the case.... with the majority of us folk in general though the big 3 or foam+Propecia or finasteride does NOT regrow any new hairs in the temple area. It may help out in the frontal hair part and crown but not temples.

After 3 years I can safely say it has not helped me in my temple area.... but this may not be the case for some lucky folk so its always worth a try !

Im gonna look at other options I think:)

thx good site, also reconfirms the 2 points about minoxidil/Propecia or finasteride not working in the temple areas....

hair transplant is the only way or a hair piece sadly...

Interesting point it mentions is that if you do get a hair transplant for the temple/front areas these hairs do not have DHT so wondering if this means your hair loss will be none if very little ?
