Unwanted Growth

Hey guys,

I've been using Rogaine for about 4 months now and I've noticed that I grew vellus hairs on my forehead, my eyebrows got thicker, and I'm seeing growth on my cheeks as well. Also, my beard hair has gotten much thicker and is growing much faster than before. Body hair has also seemed to have increased/thicken. This is really troubling and embarrassing for me.

If I stop using Rogaine now will all of this unwanted hair growth go away and if so any idea how long it will take?

Also can anyone recommend an alternative to Rogaine and Propecia that doesn't have any real adverse side effects?

Thanks in advance.

Rogaine is growing you hair and you're complaining? Its easy to shave or trim body hair or even your eyebrows. I use a razor to just lightly shape my eyebrows on the outside, its easy.

But seriously I cant really understand what your complaining about. If your growing hair and keeping your hairloss at bay, then the side effects your refering to are very minor indeed. I would put up with a lot more sides than that if it ment keeping my hair.

Did you get any scalp hair growth from the Rogaine ? I've been on the foam since August 18, and I'm finding more body hair...still waiting for scalp hair. I'm thinking body hair is a good sign, and precursor for scalp hair

I have the same thing and appreciate it. I have gotten this hair in the past and gotten off Rogaine and the hair dissapeared within 2 months. Also it never really gets that bad.

I suppose you have a point there. It's just a bit shocking to see all this new hair in places where you DON'T want it.

sunnyone1, I did get scalp hair growth from rogaine. It's not as thick as my hair used to be but it has thickened up considerably and my temples even started to fill in. I think the increased body hair came alongside a pretty big shed. After the shed, the hair started to come back thicker and looked more "alive." Be sure to use Nizoral also.

Thanks KielMcK, that's a bit reassuring. Did your beard growth return to normal also?

Rogaine also makes the area around my eyes red and it has given me black circles under my eyes. Is it possible that I'm taking too much of it? I probably take about a half capful or even less like it advises. Should I cut down to once a day or take it every other day or something?

Thanks for the replies guys.

Once a day topical use of Rogaine (topical minoxidil 2% and 5%) seems to be almost as effective as using it twice a day. The reason is, that although minoxidil has a relatively short half-life of several hours when given orally, when topically applied, it has a half-life of 22 hours in the skin. This suggests that once a day dosing is a reasonable option. It is important to realize that Pfizer, the company that now makes Rogaine, specifically states that it will be less effective if used only once a day.
If minoxidil is discontinued, the effects of the drug wear off within three months and the previous pattern of hair loss resumes. When minoxidil is restarted, one generally does not regain the hair that was lost, so it is best not to stop and start the mediation, but to use it regularly

Thanks for the link, Yuber.

Upon some further searching I found this piece on this site:
Why can't I get my hair wet for four hours after using Rogaine / Can I use Rogaine after showering with my hair wet?

Wet scalp skin increases the penetration of topical drugs by several times (2x-5x more powerful). Because Rogaine does have side effects, they must attempt to keep you from increasing its potency and thereby side effects. However, if you apply Rogaine and do not experience any side effects, you might try applying it to wet scalp if you want to make it more potent. Be sure you have someone around if you do this since there is a change that you may not experience side effects on dry scalp, but may with wet scalp. If you experience side effects when applying Rogaine to dry hair, DEFINITELY *NEVER* apply it to your hair wet and be sure to follow Upjohn's instructions about not letting your hair get wet for 4 hours.

From personal experiences, I have heard many people who have said that Minoxidil did not work well for them, but after they started applying it to a wet scalp, it started working much better.

I would always apply Rogaine right after I got out of the shower in the morning. I'm going to try to apply it on a dry scalp only and hopefully the sides will go away while maintaining/growing hair on the scalp exclusively.

I was using way to much rogaine in the past and I had these effects. I would suggest decreases the amount a little bit. Its seems you may be a super responder to it.

My beard returned to normal after I stopped use. I am now using a less amount and I am having 0 of those side effects
