Unlimited DHT?

Apologies in advance if this is a bone-headed question (at least to some on this site) but I've read posts from people who are worried that exercise might affect their hair/accelerate the balding process, possibly because of extra testosterone resulting from the physical activity.

My question is: does it follow that if you make more testosterone you will end up with more DHT? Is there a direct correlation or is there a limit to the amount of DHT that one's body can produce? Also, another, secondary, question: would this mean the hair loss would increase more rapidly with more DHT or is there a minimum DHT level that kills the hair follicules and any more DHT in the body makes no difference to the rate of the outcome? :dunno:

It depends on SHBG (sex hormone binding globulin). SHBG binds to testosterone and prevents it from converting to estrogen or DHT.

Exercise increases SHBG, so therefor it would only increase testosterone not DHT. Anything that lowers SHBG would mean the testosterone that was bound to it, is going to convert into estrogen or DHT.

Animal protein and dietary fat decrease SHBG while dietary fiber, fasting and exercise increase SHBG. Understand?

Thanks for that explanation misterE. I've read some of your other posts which I found very interesting. One thing I don't understand is that you say meat and fish are bad for our hair when I've always believed the rich source of proteins in them are very good for our hair. Vegetarian sources of proteins don't come close.

The stronger the dietary protein you eat, the more IGF-1 you will have, the more IGF-1 you have, the less SHBG you will have, the less SHBG you have, the more DHT and estrogen you will have, the more estrogen you have, less testosterone is made, leaving DHT as the dominate androgen.

Yes, and man has become less and less hairy since then.

If I may interject here, meat and fish are great sources of protiens, you were never wrong there! The real problem boils down to the complexity of the protien (i.e., proteins coming from an animal are much longer chains of amino acids, which are much more difficult for the body to break down, so what it do to sufficiently get the job done? Pulls minerals and various other compounds from tissues and bones throughout the body to help in breaking it down. Oddly enough, natural sources of food contain already shorter chains of amino acids, which is easier for the body to break down, and use without hindering any elements in the body.

True, but it isn't vital for living, We are looking to strive, not survive.

I tend to eat chicken and oily fish for my proteins. What do you mean by natural sources of food Lord Justin? Can you give me some examples that I could include in my diet?

Peas, Lentils, Beans, couscous, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, (though it;s more oil than long-chain amino acids. One thing people fail to realize is you can get many amino acids from fruits and vegetables. Try consuming much more of those, and eat protein more infrequently. Though if you do this, I'd recommend aerobic exercise more.

Are you saying that the homosexuals have always eaten meat?
