True or False?

Is it true that treatments such as finasteride and minoxidil are less likely to work if you are experiencing hair loss at an ealry age?

My granddad was a NW7 in his late 20's, and many of you may know me as a member on here, and seem to think my hair is not thinning, but the doctor said a few weeks ago that it is slightly. I'm growing in the same way my granddad and uncle are and will start the treatments as soon as I reach 18.

I'm going to keep fighting this hair loss, no matter what. So could someone please answer the question at the the top... thanks.

People who have the most extreme levels of loss like NW6/7 always seem to start earlier than most eg in their late teens. So yeah this is probably true that they have the highest level of sensitivity in their follicles and probably treatments wont be as effective.

Ah well, I will keep on fighting and start the treatments as soon as possible. Would you reckon it will help if I started the treamtents as soon as i can?

I actually think it's a bit more muddy than that. Some people remain NW1/2 until their 30s, but are NW7 by their 50s. Equally, some people start early and never progress that far. My uncle started losing his hair as young as I did, but I saw him a week ago (for the first time in years) and realized he's still only NW5. And he's in his 50s too.

As for youngsters on finasteride, again it varies a lot. It might have no effect on you, or it might stop your loss indefinitely. There's no way to tell.

All you can do is give it a try and see what happens. The longer you ask yourself the ifs and the whys, the longer it will take you to pull the trigger and get going.

It is so depressing to think about. I just want to start the treatments now before I find out it is too late. But of course it will cost way too much money... I'm just hoping that I have not inherited my grandad's genes... my father is also a NW7 :shakehead: but... he has kept his hair longer.

I feel sorry for my cousin who is 13 who is already losing his hair :(

It's tough, but he has a much better chance of recovering some of his 20s for himself (as do you) than most of us here.

There's still plenty you can do. If you can't adjust to the shaved head look, there are treatments, hair transplants, and failing that hair systems. It's important to remember that the majority of people in this battle do eventually find a workable solution, and only a few (who are inherently more likely to frequent forums) remain in the wilderness. Chin up, and keep fighting.

Are you sure your 13 year old cousin is losing?
How developed is he?

Most 13 year olds don't even have any facial hair let alone the beginnings of male pattern baldness.

I personally think you're a little bit :hairy:

It looks thin all over. It could be because he doesn't eat much, I'm not sure. But you can easily tell, especially when it turns greasy, when it is washed you can't tell as much. He also has very hairy legs for his age and my (also his) granddad and uncle also had hair bodies around this age, so it is quite obvious we have the same genetics and are following the same patterns as our uncle and granddad.

Don't forget that a lot of people simply have thin hair. I know plenty of people with no male pattern baldness but whose scalp has always been visible through their hair when enough light's shining.

i think even the guys with super agressive hairloss do okay if they start the treatment while they still have most of their hair. hard to do this though since you are usually not sure until it is too late.

I really hope so!

Because it is obvious I am losing my hair as I can see gaps through my hair when it is greasy, and there is thinning all around the crown, and it never used to be like this, because my hair used to be completely thick. But I guess all the straightening when I was younger didn't help, plus I got it dyed about 10 times where one caused a sevre itch. This is when I started to shed loads, but this was 1 and a half years ago.

My cousin had thick hair, and it appears thick when he washes it. I obviously can't talk to him about it, as it will scare him. But I will keep an eye out for it.
